Does anyone even own a reel to reel machine anymore? I recently ran across an old reel-to-reel and a cassette tape of my late father's VO work. Circa 70s? I don't have any remaining videos or audio of him, so this would be amazing to get into digital format and preserve. If anyone has the capability to digitize these (and even run some basic restoration?) I'll gladly compensate you for your time!!!!

adam - i don't have a RTR anymore - but i've done this before. with a tape that old, be VERY careful. they can deteriorate significantly & rapidly the oxidation can fall right off the plastic - heat can help (google) and you might only get one play out of it - so make it count.

just some basic advice - no actual solution - sorry.

Adam, with something that fragile and meaningful, you might want to look into professional restoration services.

I would bet that at least some of the studios you work for in Chicago would have an old reel to reel machine around and would be able to do this for you.

I just had some cassettes of my mother and brother playing music together in 1979 converted to CD by a friend here in San Diego who has a voiceover recording studio.

I have a couple of reel to reel machines and would be happy to do it for you at no charge. However, as Doug said, you might want to take it to someone who could restore it if there are problems with it. ie: bake it etc.

Adam-- Sonicraft, is very legit and Steve is a good guy. You'll note on their website that our Mike Harrison does some work with them. He'd likely to able to let you know if Steve could help with your specific needs.

When we have had to go back and digitize material from old R2Rs, we've used this process successfully:

http://www.wendycarlos.com/bake%20a%20tape/baketape.html

Written for the use of a close friend of mine (Wendy) and we've been be able to report back to her nearly 100 percent success in recovering material from tapes.

at one point i had a 4 foot stack of ampex 456 that had been stored improperly for more than 10 years -

i baked successfully at 130 degrees (f) for 2 hours. it worked & my wife HATED me for it --- but - i agree --- with something this special & important - trust the pros.

I had a local (Salt Lake City) guy named Klay Anderson restore and put to disc some audio from a 3 1/2" reel. It was quite some time ago, but he did a fine job and I have good audio of my dad and my sisters from 1970.

Klay's website (klay.com) is painful, so here's his number:
1-800-FOR-KLAY

and I am:

I highly recommend "Uncle" Roy Yokelson of Antland Productions. A *very* accomplished audio engineer of several prominent NYC studios and post houses going back to the 80s, nobody has worked with magnetic recording media more than he.

And, he's about the nicest person one could ever meet.

Have a look at his credentials here http://antlandproductions.com/credits.htm and then give him a shout.

Yikes! I somehow missed this nice recommendation from Bill before posting about Uncle Roy. Thanks so much, Bill!

Yes, I occasionally work with Steve at Sonicraft, and he's extremely qualified and detail-oriented. However, while he does possess machines of every open-reel track format/configuration ever used (including 3- and 12-track), from quarter-inch to two-inch, I don't believe he deals with cassette, and doing a setup for a single 5-inch reel *might* be cost-prohibitive.

However, do check out his website, loaded with very impressive in-depth information and photos: http://www.sonicraft.com/.

Thanks for the recommendation Mike! I'll contact Roy and see what his thoughts are. Yeah - SonicCraft looks amazing, but it looks like it would cost over $250 just to do what I'm looking for.
