I do a LOT of field recording in which I interview people talking in a wide variety of OUTDOOR settings and just bought the highly-touted Beyerdynamic M58 and the first thing I realized is that Dynamic mics are LOW output...so....I am thinking of buying the Marantz PMD661 FET modified by Oade Brothers.....anybody have any other thoughts/suggestions so I can still use this great ENG mic but NOT have to crank up the gain to 90 !?

This is one time where I would suggest an Sennheiser MKH 416. A shotgun microphone is designed for ENG/EFP field work and due to it's hypercardoid pattern it will reject extraneous noise rather than consume it.
Please remember the MKH416 is not designed for VO, but will do a great job for this type of scenario.
Another mic to consider are the Rode NT3 (another shotgun microphone)

Alternately, you might also keep your eyes peeled for a 415t....
Being T-powered, it runs on 12v, rather than 48....and has a nifty button battery adapter for field work, making it easy to power in the field.
Also tends to be a good deal cheaper on the resale market than the 416. _________________ Don Brookshire
