I'm just slightly concerned about a subtle background noise on our recordings today. Anything to worry about?

I am able to detect a cross +35db lift in multiple frequencies. Have a look at your pre. If that doesn't work stare really hard at your cabling. I once had to send a "final warning letter" to my mixer; it resigned. Now running a Kebab Shop in Alcester.

Mr Banks... That +35db lift in multiple frequencies to me sounds like close micing an elephant fart. Nothing subtle about that!

I would suggest removing the Auralex, followed by all of the equipment and yourself from the wooden sailing vessel you're recording in. That ISDN bill's got to be a killer.

Might I suggest a drastic change in diet.

I figured out the problem. We have builders working on our sexy new studio. Apparently that kind of noise from drills and hammers is "normal". I've suggested they tone it down a bit so we can work in the booth, but they are quite obstinate.

Will post pics soon - should be complete by the middle of August...

Whenever the term 'sexy' is employed in a discussion about a studio, you know it's gonna be good!! Can't wait to see the pics.

On a more serious note, I was doing a short VO last week and kept getting this low-frequency hum. Checked the cables. Checked the power supply to the computer. Checked to make sure the mic was fully connected to computer, etc. Turned off lights.

Still a hum.

Walked around outside my VO space, didn't hear it. Went downstairs. Fridge not on. Freezer not humming. Back upstairs, listened quietly. Went back into VO space, I didn't really hear it, decided to continue recording. Sure enough, hum is still there.

Decided to go the bathroom.

While in there, happened to notice the cat drinking fountain, which is powered by an aquarium motor. It was putting out a low hum. Turned it off. Re-recorded lines.

Hum gone.

So, I couldn't hear it outside the VO space, which is sound-treated (but not proofed). I think that the CDF motor vibrates the floor, which somehow traveled along into the VO space and the mic picked it up.

Conclusion: always go to the bathroom before finishing a session. Wink Also, sound-proof space where CDF sits (especially if on a tile floor).

I sent both "hummy" and non-hummy versions to the producer, and he said the hum was really quiet, but we could both see it on the meters. He wasn't bothered by it, but it sure was driving ME nuts.

Colin, I don't see why a noise gate and some de-essing wouldn't bring it back to tip-top, no?

Weirdly, no!

Week two and the gang of four builders has reduced to a gang of two. It's all rather boring studwork and plasterboard at the moment. Phase 1 should be complete at the end of the week. Then we'll have a break for 3 weeks before we start phase 2. Will post pics later....
