Hello! I'm currently in the process of creating my commercial demo and I'm having some issues with creating the background music. I know that the VO should be the focus but I also know that bad background music can make your demo look cheap and unprofessional. I would love to get some tips and tricks on how to create good music for commercial demos. I am currently using mixcraft 6 to put my demo pieces together.

My advice is don't produce your own demo. There are some amazing demo producers out there who know what the current trends are, what agents and buyers are looking for, etc. They invest and reinvest in contemporary music libraries to make sure their demos are relevant. Check out Demosthatrock.com

Copy what Bob said..

Don't think you can just slap a music bed behind a VO and voila! There's my demo!

Demos are very tricky to put together... Quality music beds are expensive..

If you can't do it right, don't bother.

Unfortunately my funds are very tight right now so I will not be able to afford hiring someone to produce it for me. Any other suggestions that wouldn't cost too much if anything?

Of course you can do it on the cheap. 99% pursuing Vo do it that way! Course, 99% don't work.

Look, your competition, those who are at the top of the game, they have zero excuses. This is expensive. Always had been, always will be. And, it's not going anywhere.

The industry isn't looking for actors with demos. They are looking for brilliant actors with exceptional demos. And, there's no rush or deadline. The business will always be there. If this is something you really want, be willing to do more than everyone else. No shortcuts. I had miles of day and night jobs to subsidize my Vo ventures. But I never put anything out there that wasn't stellar. Bad demos close more doors than good ones open. This business has a longer memory for bad than good.

Now, if your interests in this are just to dabble, a fun hobby, go for the cheap route. Nothing wrong with that. But if you are looking to play with the big boys, if you go cheap and don't get the results you want, don't complain!

Understood. I guess I'll just have to hold off for now till I can get the funds. Thank you very much for the advice!

Jason... If you're looking for free or possibly "cheap" music, do a seach for "royalty free music". You may find a few tunes to download and mix with your demo, just to hear how things sound. But in the long run... a pro demo speaks volumes.

As quotes go...I consider this one a "keeper."
