i rescued this SUPER awesome late '40s drill press from a barn. after a LOT of cleaning, a little rewiring & a bit of paint - it has taken up residence on my bench. it weighs a freekin' ton.

The fact that it weighs a ton probably means it works AWESOME!

Is that a Toolkraft? (Model 350?) If so, it was probably made right up the road from me in Springfield, MA.

You can see from the three pulleys on the motor that it has at least three speeds. Assuming there's another assembly of at least three more pulleys on top of the drill shaft, under that dome, that would give you a minimum of nine.

lee - you're RIGHT! i knew i could adjust the belt up & down making it a 3-speed. but after reading your comment - i saw that i can also adjust the MOTOR up and down changing the position of the pulleys vertically! 9 speeds! cool!

btw - above i said "mastercraft" --- it's "Homecraft"

I may not be right. If the pulleys on top of the drill shaft are arranged with the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top, it may be just a three-speed but set up that way so the circumference of the belt remains constant. Of course, you could always try different combinations to see if they would work, maybe with a link-belt.

Man, hook that thing up to a Focusrite preamp and I bet it'll sound great! Here's hoping you post an A and B comparison.

ok - the pulleys on the drill shaft are the inverse of the pulleys on the motor.

the motor adjusts up & down to change pulley position & adjusts back & forth to adjust belt tension ... so that would give me 9 belt positions, right?

all that said, after i get a new belt, i will probably NEVER change the position.

i plan on an a-b comparison between this drill and my "travel rig" an 18v cordless dewalt with about 2/3rds battery life.

Was the manual with the press, or did you download it? I saw it in vintagemachinery.

Good tools are always cool. (cheap tools should be left at the store.)
