Does anyone here, who accesses their checking accounts online, ever see promotional blurbs for third-parties actually stuck in-between the transactions in your account summaries?
I remarked to my bank that I really didn't care for that, and was told "all banks do that."
Is this true? _________________ Mike

I've never heard of that or seen it. I've been with 4 banks in the past 8 years (for various reasons) and not one did that. I wouldn't be surprised if banks were doing that now. Gotta make a buck where you can. |

I have not seen it with any of my banks or credit unions; then again I do not use the online side that much.
For me I would ask the banker if "everyone is doing it" then, if everyone were to jump off a cliff, would you follow?

If I were to advertise, the LAST thing I would want to do is tie myself in with B of A. The SECOND to the last would be Chase (ever hear of a bank calling BEFORE a payment is due to find out if you're going to be paying it? I was never late, gave them no reason to call, yet every month from 2008 to 2010, they did. One time they even asked 'where I was going to be getting the money'. I so wanted to say, 'from selling drugs', but instead I just ripped into him like a monkey on a banana)
Sorry, had to share. Waaaay to bizarre to keep it to myself!
And no, my bank WF, does not advertise for others, and I do all my banking online. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

Yes, b of a sucks. Nominee for a worse bank yet: Wells Fargo. This is several years ago now but I went into a WF branch and presented a check from a rock solid person on his WF account. They would not cash it for me. I had loads of I.D. proving who I was. I welcomed them to call the check issuer who was just down the street... they said then knew him. But since I didn't have a WF account they wouldn't give me the money.
WF? No, WFF, dude.

Maybe that was your problem. I know you. I think they made a wise decision! _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

I use B Folders to bank online at Wells Fargo. Never seen any ads. As for the check cashing dilemma, I think the problem would be universal when you don't have an account in any particular bank. _________________ "Bailey"

Let's see, the person who HAS an account at a bank writes YOu a check. They are paying YOU with their MONEY. Why should the bank care about whether or not YOU have an account there? They are supposed to cough up the money for their client who is trying to pay his bill. I'd say they were flat wrong and have no business requiring you to have an account just so you can get your money. I'd drop a bank like that so fast it would make their cashiers spin. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

And all of the above is why I use 2 small commercial banks. They have no fees, require no minimum balances, and they know me. Oh, and they charge $10 for incoming wire transfers - making them less expensive than paypal. |

Of course I was kidding Bruce. I don't think that's WF's policy any more. I have two vendors that I write checks to on a regular basis. One check significantly large, and I know they both cash them at WF, but neither have an account there. But you can still dislike WF if you wish. I don't want to stand in the way of that. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

And with regard to Mike's original question, no, it hasn't happened to me but I don't do that much online banking. However, I think most of us agree that if we allowed third party advertising on our own voiceover websites, it would make us look pretty cheesy. Can't be any different for a bank. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Thanks, Lee. And I really appreciate all the feedback from everyone.
While I personally am fed up with the incessant in-your-face branding these days, I realize it's not going away. When first logging in to my account, there is usually a large splash that appears, promoting something the bank is offering. I told the person at the bank, I can deal with those, although I believe customers should have the option in their profiles to opt out of seeing them. Or, as I suggested, create a menu or clickable graphic on the page titled "Promotions" or "Special Offers," and allow customers to investigate should they choose to do so.
HOWEVER, as for the third-party promotional blubs inserted between individual transactions in my account summary, THAT is NOT the place for such crap. Especially with all the recent and ongoing hackings and security breaches at retail transaction terminals all over the country (and probably on a global scale) compromising consumers' personal data, third-party promotional messages embedded in my account summary completely destroys any confidence I may have had in their security efforts up to that point.
Like everything else, unless there is a clear "NO" stated, a "yes" is assumed. (A lot like the cheesecloth defense used by some alleged rapists; isn't it?)
Please keep the comments coming. I want to be able to tell my bank that; no, all banks DO NOT do this.
Many thanks. _________________ Mike
