This gave me a little chuckle since we all come from different backgrounds and know there is no one way to get into voiceover. A friend contacted me and asked if I could fill in the following sentence so the referring councilor at school would know what to put down for this high schooler's record. The kid wants to get into voiceover. What would you put in the following sentences?
After graduation, the (student) will .....seek college degree in....(how should the wording go to describe the work you are doing...?)
After graduation, the (student) will....be employed as....??? _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

HEAVY QUESTIONS!
Even decades ago when business trends changed more slowly, most of us were doing a 'SWAG' when we talked about career plans. What looks great and promising at age 16 may turn out to be THE PITS by the time you are 26 or 36.
In some of the broadcast forums there are big-time shouting matches over "the future of radio". What will the V-O market be like 10 or 20 years from now. I would presume that it would not be wise for a high school counselor to 'rubber stamp' any academic track that we might propose today that prepares the student for no other vocational opportunities other than Voice Over.
The market place has pushed me to make career changes several times. (Every 10 years on average!)
Study business administration? Some day a Voice-Over client might offer the opportunity to join the advertising department of a corporation.
You didn't tell us if the candidate is male or female? What if the candidate marries someone who has a well define career which requires vocational geographical relocation. Will there be times it would be better to be able to do other work in a given location because it is a short term assignment for the partner, and doesn't warrant constructing a studio in the short term location.
What if the vocal chords become damaged early in life. What is Plan B? |

Answer: seek a Degree in Business Marketing and/or Computer Programming.
After graduation, the (student) will....be employed as....???
Answer: (If in radio or as a VO) he/she will be unemployed or is that not-employed, for the most part.
Or if he/she follows the above suggestion... Marketing Manager, Business Specialist or Computer Programmer.

Live the words of T. E Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia. He wrote in "The seven pillars of wisdom: A triumph
"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up in the day to find it was vanity, but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.”
A degree in law and economics may help too. |

Perfect replies, Gentlemen, thank you. I was going for marketing/business as well but I will share all of these. I do not know the persons gender as it is confidential. I appreciate your input.
And, Philip, I love that quote. Thank you. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.
