Earlier, I posted a picture of my booth just after I had put all the foam things on the walls and ceiling. I used (Loctite High Performance #200) spray adhesive on everything except the bass traps, on which I used the supplied little squares of double-sided tape that they indicated were for temporarily mounting them to assess their performance in the intended location(s). Well, temporary is exactly right. By the time I got home from Faffcon, the bass traps and most of the other pieces had fallen off the walls and ceiling.

So what are some better ways to adhere Auralex and similar foamy things to my interior surfaces. Carpet tape? Velcro? Hot glue (that seemed to work for attaching the foam to the insides of my ventilation boxes)? Loctite #300?

If you have successful experience with this, I'd appreciate hearing what you used.

I used a staple gun. Nothing has fallen off yet. This will result in ripping the foam if you take it off though...but it only rips in a couple of spots if you don't go crazy with the staples. It really only needs one. If you do it in the 'valley' it's no biggy.

Pro Stick 65 High Strength Spray Adhesive works very, very well, but smells very, very bad. It's available from Meijer here in the midwest (and probably every place else, too, but Meijer is less than a minute up the road here).

The spray that Auralex kicked in when I relieved them of a bunch of funky kelly-green metrocut worked great, too. I didn't look closely enough to see who actually makes it for them...

The 3M varieties did not work well for me at all, and stuff fell down after a fairly short time.

Along the lines of stapling, if you happen to mount your foam on something that you can send a bolt through from the other side, you can make a small, nice, round hole where you want to put the bolt, then run the bolt in from the wall surface through the foam from its back, then put your nut and large-ish washer on to secure. Do that in each corner and it looks kinda cool, *and* gives you little hangy-pegs for random cable stuffs. If you're feeling decorative, you could also fit appropriately-threaded decorative doodads on the ends of the bolts. This isn't necessarily better than stapling, but does avoid tearing and is infinitely un-doable. Just remember *not* to back into it, because it hurts.

And if you use The Bolt Method and find your stuff kinda bulges or is loose, you can use a small amount of adhesive or tape or whatever in just a few key places to keep it tight against your surface, instead of slathering everything with the stickies.

I've heard that dollops of liquid nails will hold well and won't tear the foam too horribly if you need to take it down later. The wall will be messed up though. Unless I hear a better option, that's what I'm going to try when my Auralex arrives next week.

Yep, the spray adhesives that actually hold will continue to hold even after you've removed the front of the foam...

You could also use a backing, say pegboard, cut to not quite go to the edges of your pieces. Use strong adhesive to permanently attach the foam to the backing, then use whatever you want - toggle bolts, nails with their heads protruding just a bit from the wall, whatever - to hang and hold the pegboard. You can have an adjustable air gap that way, too.

finish nails - or nails with small heads. toe-nailed through the edge or a valley. should only take a couple. won't hurt the foam - or the wall (much).

Hi Lee,
I've used 3M "Foamtak" spray adhesive for Auralex acoustics with outstanding results, and it doesn't eat into the foam. No nail holes in that expensive foam, and in most cases it stays where it's supposed to. Even on the ceiling. And I used it in 2008. Very rarely do I need to reapply.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have since discovered that if I had used the spray adhesive like contact cement (i.e. spraying both surfaces and giving them a few moments to start to dry and become tacky) rather than just spraying the back of the foam, I might have gotten better results. So that's what I'm going to try next. I may also go with some staples but when I tried that on the inside of my ventilation boxes, the adhesive tended to gum up my pneumatic staple gun and I had to stop after every few staples to manually push the staple driver back into position.

Frank's suggestion was the winner. The bass traps are being held in place by a combination of spray adhesive on both the wall and the foam, carpet tape, and a few drywall screws top and bottom. Without the screws, they had fallen down, but since I deployed the screws, they have remained solidly in place. The foam they are made of seems sturdy enough that washers were not necessary. And the screws are the same color as the foam, so they are invisible.

All of the lighter pieces of foam seem to be holding with just an application of spray adhesive on both the wall and the foam. And I have T-pins to reinforce the spray glue and carpet tape application of the heavier pieces of foam on the walls.
