Thinking about going more cleanish with a Grace 101 to supplant, possibly replace my Great River ME-1NV. Mics are u87ai and 416. Anyone with experience with the Grace, your input is mucho appreciado!

Rob----had one, eventually sold it.

It IS clean, to the point of "clinical" clean....ya know, just wire+gain.

You'd probably like it well enough, but you might well find it pretty boring after your ears have gotten used to the sound of the GR. I've heard your cleanish sound on the GR, and it adds something appealing to the sound, even as subtle as it may be, that I don't think the M101 is capable of.

If you're looking for clean Rob, then Jim Williams may still have one of his HSMPre's available. Last I heard he was not going to make another batch. It's clean but still has a lovely polish. I use it with a 416 and occasionally a U87. Lots of other choices out there, I know....

What do you want to know, Rob? If some individual with a particular mic and voice almost identical to yours also like the Grace M101?

My last post was last night. Since then curiousity got the best of me and I ordered one.....so, I'll find out first hand. I got an open box deal on one, so if I have to re-sell it won't have to take much of a hit.

It's awesome? "Wire with gain", US made in Boulder Colorado, my cousin works in assembly (biased). Simple, reliable, clean, lots of gain, good HPF, and possibly unnecessary with a good interface in the same price point such as Apogee DUET, Audient iD22, Focusrite Forte, Universal Audio Apollo, etc...

I use the Grace all the time and it is great. I use it with my SM7B mic and this preamp will give you the gain for this type of high gain dynamic mic. I just got a new Michael Joly mic the MJE-V250 and it is really nice going through the grace. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It is very clean sounding in a good way to me.

Grace 101 sounds like a freshman course in divinity school. Rolls Eyes

okay, I'm most likely not going to go through the whole "which one do you like better" because quite frankly I think at this point I can make the decision on my own, but I'll tell you......the "truth" of the Grace 101 can be a beautiful thing (so far)......I do think that mic placement is a little more important with such a clean pre, and going a little more off axis makes a difference.....not sure which one I'll keep because I really don't want to keep both, but at the moment I'm leaning towards keeping the Grace.
