Just about all of us have home studios, but we all have clients that insist on having you come to their studio...it's happened to me quite a bit (about 6 times this year) with a large production house my area..how often does it happen to you? |

I still go to local studios 2-3 times per week, on average. I don't mind it, actually -- I like to just wear my "actor" hat, and I always have something else that needs to be done while I'm out, so it kills two birds. _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

Not enough. I much prefer to record at someone else's studio than my own. Last week I had the choice to record via ISDN or go to the studio, and I chose the latter. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

About six times a year for me nowadays. It's a bit of an adventure when it involves 3-hour train rides up to Seattle and back to go play monsters and heroes.
I've been doing these comic dialogue radio commercials for a political candidate (actually against his opponent) by ISDN lately and now they're talking about me flying down to LA to do an on-camera version(s). I think it will stay just talk, but it's interesting to think about.

Multiple times a week, but since many of our local studios have disappeared, the numbers are dropping.
But the more I market myself outside of my local area, percentage-wise, more of my work is happening on ISDN/ipDTL/SCNow, etc. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

Well, here's an update along these lines. Apparently these political spots have gained a lot of traction and press, so now they've decided to fly me to Washington DC this Friday and shoot a TV version or two on Saturday. Zip back home Sunday. Talk about your commutes!
Holy crap.

About once a month for me... lately those have mostly been trips to San Francisco (a 90-minute drive with no traffic, close to 3 hrs during rush hour), but those jobs pay well enough to justify the time and expense. Plus it's a good excuse to head down to the city and just get out. _________________ Chris Rice - Noisemaker

I'm curious about Rick's and Scott's "Never" replies. Is that because the opportunity never presents itself, or because you hate doing it?
Personally, with so much of what I do being self-directed, I relish the opportunity to show a producer that I am versatile, can take direction, and I'm easy to work with. Of course, you also get that same opportunity in an ISDN or Skype session or on a phone patch, but I enjoy some human contact once in a while. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I do ISDN or Phone Patch just about every day. One of the reasons I don't go to remote studios is because it would take too much time away from work here. NFL Season is here. Voice of all the Minnesota Vikings TV, Radio and Stadium. Stuff comes in on a 'need now' basis and I comply. Also do promos for The Sportsman Channel. Session requests rarely come in with more than an hour's notice. And they are usually Tues thru Friday. Studios, between commute, arriving early, waiting, session, and commute back, take at least two hours. I can't afford to be gone that long so I decline, deferring to ISDN or phone patch. So far no has said 'never mind'.
As an aside, I have done studios in the past and enjoy them thoroughly. Always seem to make a friend or two. I enjoy the comradery. But with ISDN sessions you usually get between two and eight people in the remote studio. I can still hang out with them and I don't even have to wear shoes. _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics
