I'd usually post this in GearSlutz, but I think we have enough of you in here, too Smile

Client wants another Red 7 but they are out of production. He's not the "used gear" type. What would you recommend? My go-to channel strip is the Grace M103, but I don't think it will sound like the Red 7 with all of its transformery glory.

There are now two DIY versions of the RED's available, do a Google search. If he is handy with a soldering iron, he can make one himself or if not I know of several who will do the build for a fee. It is not difficult.

Oh and the sound like the real thing, I built one and put it up against my original, sounded perfect.

Or, just tell him to get over his "used gear" paranoia. Rolls Eyes

Some of us refer to ours as "vintage", if that will make him feel better. Inoccent

Rob, There is a new Lunchbox Red (500 series). But no plugin that I am aware of. It is called the Red 1: http://us.focusrite.com/mic-pres/red-1-500-series-mic-pre

It is tough to be funny in text, sorry I didn't catch that one... Oh and W00T W00T

Oh, the Red 1 is only $800.00 plus your lunchbox....

George, the only option I could suggest with the Neve sound of the Red 7 is the Golden Age Projects Pre-73, http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Pre73MK2?adpos=1o1&creative=54989553361&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=COaFxr79xcECFYqBfgodqhoAnw

As soon as you start using your own new gear, it becomes used gear. cool

Didn't the red series have a that classic Neve mojo? If that's the sound he's after there's a lot of choice these days...

There were two varieties of the Redd Four Seven or Red 47; one from EMI and the other from Focusrite. Both are considered to have the "Neve" sound, but only the original Redd Four Seven is the classic color everyone seems to desire.

I use the Red 8. I have heard the Golden Age Pre 73 has a similar slight overdriven transistor sound if dialed in. Never used one...just what I have heard.

I did some reading up on the "Golden Age Pre 73" after it was mentioned and linked here. It made my "Spidy Senses" tingle a bit. A preamp with "color" on purpose? After working all of this time with the supposedly completely transparent Grace 101... I can feel the Gear-idus in me...starting to swell.

FWIW, for MY voice, in MY booth, with MY mics (Gefell M930, Senn 416), the GAP Pre-73 (which had some upgrades), sounded quite muddy and far too dark for my tastes. Your mileage may vary.

Oddly enough though, what caught my eye was the title of this thread, mentioning the Focusrite Red. I recorded years ago in a studio which had the Red and a Gefell M930, and I thought it was about the best I have ever sounded! So it's interesting to me that my results were so poor with the same mic and what is now being suggested as a Focusrite Red alternative, the GAP Pre-73. Maybe it was my recording booth that was messing up the synergy???

I've recorded in 2 studios with a Red and I used to own a GAP-73... sure the rooms were different but with a 416 running through all 3 of them the GAP sounded nothing like a Red. Fwiw, I gave the GAP away to a friend... it was collecting dust.

Edit: I LOVE the sound of the Red... a Red paired with a 416 is probably my favorite chain for my voice.
