You may recall my court stenographer training query of yesterday. Rather than resurrect the thread, here's a new take on it, for all of you!

I was given some test copy to record and play with to nail the timing for both a slow read and a fast one. Remember, these are aspiring court stenographers, with no training, so I was instructed to not run words together. Ha! I freakin' sound like a flippin' computer, all choppy and monotone. It's tough. It's what I'm working on now, so if you'd like to try it for chops' sake, here's the copy. One take must be 1:45, another (of same copy) must be :72. Of course, you can use whatever pres to speed up or slow down, but no runningthewordstogether (which is something I discovered is a natural, normal-sounding thing to do in narration). Have fun, fun, fun!

A slim sliver of light slipped through the pine trees and lit up the dim
swamp. A little white rabbit ran past to hide itself from the fox eyeing
it. A bit farther into the woods, some mice were hopping across the slime.
Off in the distance, a tiny bird was dining on a ripe berry while below him
scampered a lithe squirrel. From time to time, the quiet was broken by the
din of a noisy wild boar tramping through the thick undergrowth.
All at once there was a sudden stillness. Out of the mist rose a thin line
of smoke. It climbed slowly above the tips of the fir trees and carried
high in the air. Soon it was followed by a fine red line which moved across
the floor of the forest glowing with a fine heat. It was the worst type of
danger: a fire.
With a rush, the animals began to flit and run across the forest in frantic
flight before the flames. Each animal rushed to stay alive as the fire
ripped across the land. Some animals hid in burrows below the ground.
Others took to the sky. Many just ran, trying to dive and leap ahead of the
living flame, each excitedly seeking an exit from the widening line of fire.

Have you tried it with a cork between your teeth ala James Alburger and "The Art of Voice Acting"? After you take the cork out, it is like running after you have removed the ankle weights...

That reminds me... I must get a new cork for the car as I had to shave the other one down to plug up the ice chest for the drive up here last month...

(jotting down on notepad...)
