I have two mics that I am A/Bing. I'd love your input on which one sounds best on me in my room. Lemme know!

Jason, I like B. There is a brightness on A, that seems to be tamed on B. B sounds more natural to me.

I too like mic 2 better. It's more rounded and easier on the ear.

Number one had a brittleness that I found harsh and strident on your voice...to my ears in my headphones.

B seem to be picking up a little more room (not necessarily in a bad way) but overall seems a little more 3-D. I also pick B.

Well, from a mic perspective B definitely seems to be the one to take the cake (though I am not a huge fan of it with the preamp I was using). The preamp was an ART PRO MPA II which has since gone back. I was having weird gain issues where it would randomly jump up or drop in gain. Here is another sample with the Audient iD22 preamp, which is the one I use daily.

So before the reveal, here is another sample...since the first with with a preamp I don't have anymore:

I liked both A and B for the helpful packaging and shipping tips, but B for the clarity and naturalness of the narrator.

Same opinion. Although both were super clean. B might have a touch more bottom end. Whatever it is...B is more rounded and natural to the ear. IMHO.

A was crisp but sibilant. B was my pick as well.

Nice Smile

So A is the mic I've been using for the last few years...the Michael Joly Mod NT1a (which I was looking to replace because of the sizzle).

Mic B was a crowd favorite, the good ol' Sennheiser 416.

One thing I also noticed is that the 416 has a MUCH lower noise floor in the lower frequencies and I don't need to use a HPF to get the noise floor I like.

With the iD22 preamp, would you call it a keeper or just a step in the right direction?

The iD22 sounds quite good with your 416 but there are other great and more expensive options.Smile

The first option comes from Kevin Genus who loves the 416 with the Jim Williams HSMP.

Here is the link from an earlier VO-BB page...

http://vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15633&start=30

The second option is the Martech MSS-10 that Rick Riley raves about. You can read how much he thinks about the combination in this link...

http://www.vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13091&highlight=riley+416

Ther are probably some others but these two come to mind.

So, the question comes down to how much money you have burning a hole in your pocket?

Thanks all! There really isn't any money burning a hole in my pocket...I'm moving into a new home in a few months and need to build a new studio when I get there, so that is where the savings are going to be directed for a while.

I'll probably just stick with the iD22 for the time being and then look at other options once I really get to know the 416. It is quite a different animal compared to the LDC mic I've become accustomed to. I've seen plenty of threads on the "how-to" of the 416, so I'll do some digging and do some playing and see what comes out Smile

IMO once you "get" the 416 you are done as far as having to keep trying out mics.....though it's not a bad idea to have a good condenser around.
