Would love anyone's mic recommendations based on the following info:
- using it for travel, so don't want to pack a mic worth more than $500 or so and would be great if was somewhat compact.
- my home studio go-to mic is the Sen 416 and it's what my agents and clients are used to hearing me on, so maybe something similar in shotgun form?
- would love one that doesn't pick up the room as much but can still give a little love to the highs and lows in my tone (tall order, I know)
- I'll likely be using the new Focusrite iTrack Professional Dock for Recording on iPad which has phantom power and 24-bit, so a good mic to match would be great as well.
- oh, and any good very portable pop screen recommendations would be fantastic. My last shotgun was a splosive whore.
Thanks in advance. Looking forward to your thoughts and suggestions.

Hi Mike,
I took Tom Chantler's class when he was in Portland. He also uses a 416 and wanted to find a road mic that was cheaper but still got him the 416 feel. He uses the AT875 which goes for $169 at most places these days. We did some work on it and it sounded great. Tom's personal test was cutting takes from the 416 and 875 together and sending it out to agents and engineers asking how this sounded. Everyone replied that the 416 sounded as good as ever.
Me, I just stay home.
One time I did leave I recored and audition for the Stanford Cardinal on my Zoom1. They used the audition for the job, so I guess they liked the sound. Personally I thought it was my Mother In Law's linen closet that made the recording.
Good luck.

Get a used 415 for under $500, or AT875r or other small diaphragm mic that travels well. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

The at875r travels very well. Very compact. Works well in brutal environments..with the foam windscreen, and angled just right, the pops are manageable _________________ Lee Kanne

Here's another vote for a used 415. Mine is tucked safely in the pocket of my backpack in the other room of the B&B where I'm currently enjoying Asheville. _________________ Don Brookshire

Just followed George's and Guido's advice. Got a 415 on the way as my road mic. |
