The noise from the CAD is lower in frequency than the 416 which has a lot of higher frequency self-noise. To me, the 416 noise is more noticeable.
The CAD noise might be more of the room noise. The CAD is supercardioid but the 416 might be that much more focused. The CAD is more detailed across the spectrum, which is part of the reason why I hear mouth noise with the CAD (I have this issue with mine too).
Listening on (Sennheiser!) cans, I preferred the 416.
Now that I'm listening on my Yammy speakers - I prefer the CAD. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Here is a second version of the 2 mics. Both are going through the Audient iD22 for micpre and converter.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/03ifna3hx0igqn8/2%20mics%20-%20Raw%20audio%20and%20Processed%20audio.wav?dl=0
There is no HPF on the mics or the micpre. So the raw audio is not as clean as it would be with the filter on.
There are 2 versions of the audio, the raw file and then the processed file. Did not try to clean the files up. They were normalized to -3dB and then I applied processing (but without any editing). So you can hear the original raw audio and the processed audio but with editing.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. Appreciate you taking the time.
Think I have decided on which mic I will be using and that is the 416. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

All samples sound a bit muddy and boxy to me. Or you using a booth? _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

Thanks for the feedback Bill.
Yes, these were recorded in my booth. Perhaps the mic position needs adjustment. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Yeah, that CAD sounds like one of the ones that, shall we say, got through QC a bit too hastily. It's noisy. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Thanks for the feedback on the CAD. Sounds like I should send it back for another one. It took a long time to get here, so it means it will take a really long time to send it back and get a replacement.
But it is good to know that it should work better than this one does ! _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

This is my CAD going through a Mackie VLZ4 with the HPF on the Mackie and the gain pretty hot. There's some room noise around -65dB on the pauses but there isn't the hiss/self noise I'm hearing your previous samples. You sound great on the 416 - rock it!

Thanks Lance for the sample. That shows clearly that there is a NOISE issue with my CAD.
Thanks also for the compliment. Me thinks I am happy with the 416 _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Thanks Rob. I bought a very early one. Serial #1860.
Scott, glad you're happy with the 416! _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

+1 one to what Rob said ! You sound really natural on the CAD, like we are in the same room _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Thanks!
The pres on the VLZ4 are minty fresh. Bought the Mackie 402VLZ4 for $99 just to use as a pre before hitting the Scarlett. Yeah, I know I'm going through two pres that way, but it makes a difference.
The CAD was also nice on the Focusrite ISA One, but the transformer on that is way too strong for voice. Great for instruments, though.
I record in a large room with wall to wall bookshelves, bass traps, and GIK Acoustic panels. It's not perfect, but I like the sound better than the booth situations I've used. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Another +1 on your sound on the CAD Lance. Great presence. It's the best I've heard the CAD sound. _________________ There are rules to the Universe. Learn them and prosper. www.HumbleVoiceover.com |

Great sound Lance, one of the best I've heard posted on the site. I use the VLZ4/Scarlett/medium room combo too, with a 416. It's very natural. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

How are you going thru two pre's, Lance? I've got the same setup..
Scarlett 6i6 and a Mackie 402 VLZ4. I'm taking the L-R main outs from the Mackie into a Y-Connection. into Line Input 1 on the Scarlett.. I suppose you could take L-R out from the Mackie into separate 1 and 2 Line inputs on the Scarlett, but I never tried it that way..
Here's from the Scarlett 6i6 Users Guide..
"The Focusrite preamplifier stage is automatically configured for a microphone when you plug an XLR into the input, and for a line or instrument when you connect a jack plug. Select INST in the Scarlett MixControl if you are connecting a musical instrument, like a guitar, via an ordinary 2-pole jack, or to LINE if you are connecting a line level source such as the balanced output of an external audio mixer via a 3-pole (TRS) jack. Note the Combo connector accepts both types of jack plug" _________________ Lee Kanne
