Recently sold 4 mics and replaced them with 2 new ones.
Would appreciate your feedback on this A/B test, thanks! This is raw audio normalized to -3dB. Micpre was the Triton Audio D20.

Mic 1 has some noise to these old ears. _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

Ditto. Mic 2
Mic 1 seemed muddy to me. But what do I know, I'm deaf in one ear and can't see out of the other. _________________ "Dialog is the painting on a canvas of silence" |

Thanks gents for the feedback
Still a bit undecided about which one to use, as I am still learning about how to use them. Am leaning towards no.2, but both will get used at some point. _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Is Mic #1 returnable? Mic #2 much better, by far _________________ Lee Kanne

Was hoping for more guesses as to which mic was which, but...
Mic no. 1 is the CAD e100s, and mic no. 2 is the Sennheiser 416. So, Mr. Ellis you got one right! How did you recognize the 416 ?
Kind of like the 416 and will probably like it even more as time goes by
Thanks to everyone for the feedback ! _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Was the high pass filter engaged on the CAD? If so, it might be the source of the noise. _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

How close are you working each of those mics? The CAD was noisy and there were some mouth clicks too which I didn't hear on the 416 read.
Definitely the 416 here. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Thanks for the feedback Lance.
Worked the CAD about 7-8 inches away and the 416 about a foot away. Not set up to record them at the same time, so one was recorded just after the other using the same micpre and cables.
Did a gig about a week before on a 416 and that is where the engineer positioned it, about a foot away, so I tried the same and it seemed to be good.
How can I know if there is a problem with the CAD ?
It surprised me, in a negative way, that the noise level of the room tone was not greatly reduced, as I expected. Read from many CAD users, that when they plugged it in, they wondered if it was working as it was so quiet.
In my room, with my equipment, seems to be not much difference in noise level between the CAD and the 416.
A studio that I work with just recently got 2 CADs. Perhaps I can bring mine and compare it with theirs.
Appreciate your thoughts! _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Mine is quiet...unless I engage the high pass filter. That same nasty noise comes into play when the filter is engaged. Was it engaged? That might be the problem. _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

Thanks Johnny for the tip.
Yes, the high pass filter was engaged. Will check it out _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Fin,
IMO if the high pass was engaged on the CAD, but there was no high pass cut on the 416, then it's not really an apples to apples comparison.
The CAD without the highpass will sound closer to the 416 IMO |

Good point Rob!
After checking the file it appears that there was no HPF on the Sennheiser.
Will recreate the test, but this time, both will be without HPF or both will have the HFP on the iD22 when recording.
Sorry about comparing apples with (your fruit of choice). _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland
