Well, OK, I don't hate listening to music. What I do hate is, when I want to know how to pronounce the name of a product, a business, or a locality I am unfamiliar with, I search for it on YouTube, and find nothing but videos with text on the screen or a slide show of beauty shots or footage of the product in action, accompanied by music playing in the background but no narration.
Yesterday I conducted such a search and was pleasantly surprised to find a video with an actual voiceoverist narrating. I just hope Philip Banks correctly pronounced the name I was looking up. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Now I know I'm not the only one who jumps through the same hoops in order to make it sound like I know what I'm talking about. And while Todd may be correct on some occasions, like the name a town in Canada, eh, where I can call the township and just have them answer the phone to answer my question, a lot of time with farm chemicals or animal medications, who you gonna call? It would be nice if Mr. Ed were still around. 'Hey dude, what are you taking for BRD? And what is BRD anyway?'
Ran into that yesterday, and when I finally did found out the drug name, it was totally different than the way I would have pronounced it. And it took wading through a lot of You Tube crap to find that out?
Thanks Lee, for bringing this terrible malady to the mass's attention. Death to slides with music! Haven't these people ever heard of voiceovers? _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

I often have to record copy to promote V events. (fights in particular) Without youtube...many of those people's names would be hopeless mangled. Youtube has it's faults. BUT...I find them to be the "go to" place for "How to."
How to...pronounce a name.
How to ...fix my washing machine.
How to...sing a song.
(for Karoake, when your'e an "old fuddy duddy" and don't know any songs created since 1988) _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

You missed one:
How to... weep for humanity when you make the mistake of reading the You Tube comments.

I think I was, perhaps, a bit too subtle and part of the point of my posting got swept under the rug.
Point 1: I often search YouTube to find videos that might feature a narration that will guide me in the pronunciation of unfamiliar proper names, but I am frequently disappointed to discover videos consisting of music and pictures only, but no VO. (I think everybody got that part.)
Point 2: I was pleasantly surprised when a recent search turned up a video that actually contained a helpful narration.
Point 2B (the subtle bit): Bonus surprise -- the voiceoverist narrating that video was none other than Philip Banks. (Todd got it.) _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Nah. We got it.
It's just that it didn't stop us from going on a Youtube "tangent." _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

The words "subtle" and "you tube" together in a sentence have given me something akin to an ice cream headache. _________________ Andrew Fogarasi
