If you will not recoup the equipment and installation fees over the next ten (10) months, no. That is how I answer all of my questions on procurement. If I haven't used something in the last ten (10) months, it is typically headed for the chopping block.

i.e. Just sold one 416, the next might be gone in ten months, too.

Well it looks like I don't have to bother as I can now use my ipDTL to dial in to ISDN...and it works just great. Tested it with five ISDN studios this week.

IPDTL to ISDN link seems like a miracle, especially for the price.
However, if you are working "to picture" in sync, not wild, IPDTL can't keep the timing locked and will drift, driving the engineer at the studio nuts. Only Source Connect will keep all in sync at the sample level.

I live in Chicago IL, where the monthly rate for ISDN service was well over $350 when I dropped it. But just as importantly, I had a serious problem with the *reliability* if ISDN in my area, and a very low level of confidence in the willingness and ability of AT&T to fix it. They just don't want to spend money of an obsolete technology, and in fact it was hard finding a tech who knew much about ISDN.

Since I live in a major city, I have the option of paying a "talent rate" of $100/hour to use an ISDN-equipped studio downtown. Though with this rate comes the risk of being bumped if a full-paying client comes along (which has never happened). If I did get bumped, well there are very reliable SC-ISDN bridging services that cost as little as $35 per half hour.

I usually am able to roll my ISDN connection fee into my rate, but if the job pays well enough I'll eat the fee. For me, this works much better than paying $350+ for unreliable ISDN.

My most important contribution to this discussion is this: it isn't just the ROI of having your own ISDN vs the income you expect to make. You also need to consider the possible alternatives to having your own ISDN. Do you have low-cost ISDN options at a nearby pro studio? If so, that makes going without your own ISDN a much better prospect for having your ISDN income cake and eating it too.

I do get that some studios are nervous about using bridging services - it is no fun when an ISDN session goes south (ask me how I know). But the reliability of bridging services is quite good now, in my experience and in the experiences of 5 or 10 other talent I polled last year when looking for a reliable bridging service.

Three months ago I moved from my final big city home to our house in Western Kentucky. This means that after some 20 years with ISDN I've cut the cord. I'm trying to stay up to date with the pros and cons of ipdtl vs source connect, but I'm not doing a very good job keeping up.
