I thought it might be interesting to see what mics people are using. Everyone has their preferences, and we are all at different levels in the VO biz. I figured this might also be a good guide for people who are looking to upgrade, and want some reviews from people in the industry.
Currently, I have a RODE NT2A, an MD 421 II, and a Neumann BCM 104. |

I've also got a lovely U87 Ai.
Immediately prior to that, I had a TLM-103, which was also very nice!
I also have a Chinese-made mic from a Scottish company called Red5 audio - it's their RV8 model. The sounds is quite nice, although not dazzling. Quite warm, and definitely sounds good when paired with any kind of tube pre. However, it was defective right from when I first bought it in that, after approx 30 seconds of switching on the phantom power, it picks up a LOT of rfi. And I mean a lot. It completely obliterates any vocals. When it's behaving, it sounds lovely, however!
I'm plugged into an Apogee Duet 2 via an Avalon VT-737sp. |

Also have an AKG 414 B XLS, which at times I prefer due to it's somewhat understated character ...that is , understated compared to the other two.
It's very honest which I sometimes really like. Needs the right pre though, which in my case happens to be a UA 610 Solo. |

I have 9 mics, 8 preamps and a Unicorn. In order to avoid mouth noise I remain silent, I use a different "powered down" mic and pre combination for that.
Before every session I gargle with 4oz of Beluga Caviar. |

Coincidentally, I also have 9 mics:
Well, actually...11. The ones above, plus an MKh 416 and a TLM-103. _________________ Doug Turkel (tur-KELL)

In a sense, I do indeed have 9 mics. In a completely made up untrue sense. |

Sennheiser MKH416 into a Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster Pro pre.
Due to diaphragm envy, however, I've been wanting to try a Neumann TLM-103. The pills don't work, you know, no matter what they say. _________________ Mike
