Problem: 4 mics.
Got 4 mics in the studio at the moment. The first, the Sennheiser 416 is not leaving, but the question is, which of the other 3 should be the backup mic?
That's where I need your ears

Personally, I didn't like any of 'em. They all sounded too muddy or grainy. I have HAD to use one of the 3 on you, I'd pick 3. 1 was waaay to muddy (maybe proximity) and 2 sounded like a Tascam iPhone adapter mic.
If you were looking for a backup, I personally would find a used 416 or a 415. That's just my opinion though |

My first listen was on on iPad 3. Went back and listened a second time, on the studio system… I'd have to agree with Jason. They all sound pretty bad. Number One sounds worse than an Tascam iM2.. The other two sound like your generic lower end USB mic.. _________________ Lee Kanne

Thanks guys for the feedback, really appreciate it.
Just set up a ceiling mount for the mics and perhaps the position is too close to the ceiling and there is some bass reflection because of that. Will have to search for a better position and try again.
All 3 are good quality mics. Mic no.1 was the JZ Vintage 11. I knew it would be a bit bottom heavy, but read some good reviews suggesting it would be very good for VO. Guess I was too optimistic. It was from just over the pond from here, so I wanted to try one of their mics.
Mic no. 2 is a Michael Joly V250, which has been used in a number of recordings, so it was surprising to hear that it sounded "bad".
Mic no. 3 is the Microtech Gefell MT71s, which has also been used in a number of recordings. This will most likely be my alternative to the 416.
Here is a second recording with the same mics, this time with a better position in the room, and using a different audio chain.

The very last version , number 4 in the list, was recorded with another audio chain using the MT71s
Thanks again for your feedback _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland

Definitely sounds better with the new positioning, or whatever you did.
I like the first audio chain of the MT71S the best. Had the most clarity. |

I agree with Rob, but I still think something is not right. The Gefell should sound better. _________________ John Weeks Voice Overs

None approach the roundness and fullness of the 416. I'd go with number one. In this setup, 2 and 3 come across as thin and without body. In your earlier setups I leaned away from number 1 as being too muddy. Whatever you've done seems to have change that. To my ears...2 and 3 now seem harsh.
BUT of course.... _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

Thanks Clutter for the feedback.
You are right, the latter 2 recording do sound thinner. I noticed this too only after posting.
Made 2 main changes. The first is that the mic position is more centrally in the room (not so near the ceiling which comes down at an angle into the room).
The second is that I switched from Mogami cable to Vovox cable.
When I did the second recording I was no longer standing but sitting where I normally do, where it is set up very nicely for the 416.
But the ceiling mount and mic arm does not reach quite as far as it should for when I am sitting in this saddle chair. So, the first mic, which tends to be bottom heavy, sounds better. But I was probably 3 - 4 inches further away from the other 2 mics and missed the sweet spots !
Thanks for your good ears ! _________________ www.scottsvoiceover.com - An American voice in Finland
