Hi All,

I have an interesting question that I'd like to get some thoughts on.

I just received a phone call from a local country club about advertising my business on (or near, I'm not sure which) their golf score cards. It's a high end country club, i.e. probably lots of business owners/professionals. It would be on ~40,000 score cards, so everyone would see it when they fill in their score card and it would be there for the "golfing" year, which here is about 6 or 7 months.

Here's the rub. I'm just starting out so I'm really trying to invest my funds the best possible way. The cost for this is $375. On the one hand it doesn't sound like a lot of money, but when you don't have much it is. They do have a limited guarantee in that if there is no response to the ad in the first three months, they will renew it the following year for free.

I need to give him an answer by the end of the day, so if I could get some opinions here today I'd really appreciate it. I'm leaning towards doing it, but just want to see what others think.

Thanks very much everyone. Have a great day!

Deb

So, if it proves to be of no value, they will give you something of equally no value, free of charge. cool

But seriously, all you get for this is some possible name recognition amongst the local business community. No place to put your demo. And you wouldn't be casting your advertising net over a particularly wide area. To reach those same people, you might be better off joining the local chamber of commerce or some similar business organization.

And, as an aside, I kept all my golf scores with an aHobo Tounge on my smartphone and did not take a single paper golf scorecard all summer.

As an avid golfer, I can tell you it WILL get seen. Talk about your captive audience. You can spend upwards of 3 hours a round just sitting in that cart staring at the score card in front of you.

More often than not I notice the crappy ads. I think, wow that is a terrible slogan, or hey, that hamburger looks really bad. So my advice would be if you do it, make it an eye catching ad.

Of course, there is no sound and it's really hard to explain the business. Lots of high end business owners may not even know what "voice over" really is.

You could also get them to throw in 2-3 rounds of free golf, then use that time to play alone and chat up the 6 other people (3 per round) you'll meet on the course. That way you get a chance to really market your business

I've actually done a ton of business (in a past life, not voice over) on the golf course, but it was always through playing, as I mentioned above. Again, you get that captive audience for 3-4 hours and you can really do some good

i think there are a lot better ways to spend $375. if the local business is what you're after take that $375 and join the local chamber. volunteer, get on a committee and start rubbing shoulders with the cool kids.

Hi guys.

Thanks for your comments. Todd and Lee, I recently joined my local Chamber and went to my first event last week, and in fact, my local Chapter is part of a consortium, so to speak, encompassing 7 different towns.

I was leaning towards not doing it, but like I mentioned, wanted others' opinions before making any hasty decisions. Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

So, how was that crappy looking burger? You mean you didn't rush out to have one? I agree with you that an ad on a golf scorecard will get seen, but being seen is only part of the story. And would it be seen by enough people to justify the expense?

I think your strategy of showing up at the course as a single, hoping to get paired up with two or three other people who could potentially become clients is a better idea than advertising on the scorecard. And at the courses I play, you can get a lot more than two or three rounds for $375. In my opinion, it would be a better idea to do that and leave the scorecard advertising to the local restaurants, bars, car dealerships or drugstores.

We, the great unwashed, the shunned by society, the Voiceoverists so lamely and unfashionable that dogs bark at us as we halt by them need no Golf Score card publicity. We need to target market.

Did you know that Rolls Royce advertise their motor cars? Ever seen an advert for one? No? You oh pauper of the parish, you who are looked down upon by the Sin Eater who hides in the woods are not worthy of the attention of Messers Rolls and Royce. They TARGET MARKET.

The Faffers, WOVOers, SAGers and AFTRAs, VOICE2018ers, FACETUBERS, TWITLES, LinkTiners all cry with one accord "WE ARE FOR HIRE. My Lords, my Ladies throw coin of the realm upon this very day!" Their supplications are echoed, met with joy beyond measure, yet no coin.

The Herald doth not makes his proclamations before the King for he is the mouth of the Throne and needs not its ear.

"My Lord, have you coin for an humble Voiceoverist?"

"I do not, be on your way"

"I PROTEST MY LORD, you must!"

"Away lest I smite you!"

When needest thou shoes for court knock ye upon the door of the Cobbler. Never crave audience with the beggar with no feet.

If you were an actor/voice actor in a showbiz market like LA or New York
I could see running such an ad (especially LA) but otherwise I would say <meh>

The red flag - HIGH END Country Clubs don't have ads on their scorecards.
I've worked in the golf business at a high end club, still do.

Lee's recommendation on attending Chamber functions is a good one.

I'd spend the 375 on a P2P site before the scorecard ad.
