Thanks Connie-- that's actually my producer at 'BZ rendering the Upcuts with such finesse.
Were it not for upcuts, 1/2 the stuff on the air would be over time. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

The problem, of course is finding a way to make the commercial somewhat entertaining and remembered by the audience - sounds like a job for...

Once we were in a session where the script was running 75 seconds. We did it a couple of times and it just wouldn't get any shorter. So the agency guy says, "OK, make 'can not' into 'can't'".
The other talent in the spot (Andy Roberts) screamed out, "NO! THAT WILL MAKE IT TOO SHORT!" |

On those rare occasions when we come out 2 or 3 seconds short I like to say, "Oh good! We have time for a jingle!" And of course it's usually for a client you could never imagine having a jingle for.

Like a mortuary?
If there are a couple of seconds I say "Oh goody-- now we can add some acting!"
That's not mine-- I can't recall from whom I heard it, though. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Once in a session fellow VO Marv Henry--who hasn't worked in many weeks because of a horrible back problem--did a run through and had a few extra seconds. He then said, "Oh good! I have time to act!"
Don't know if that's where you heard it, though.
Marv used to appear in TV shows like 77 Sunset Strip, Sugarfoot, Rifleman and other shows of that caliber (he was usually the third cowboy on the left and the first to get shot). He started doing VO work in the early 70's and didn't stop until recently. But he's happy sitting at home watching Turner Classic Movies and eating chocolates. |
