Dear Lord, please allow me, your humble servant, to show you that becoming a billionaire will not change me for the worse.
Amen.
Think of the studio one could build for a small fraction of that billion... _________________ My full name is Karl Kuhlken (think Macauly Culkin...it rhymes)

Dammit Doug! I was just typing that!
"Hear, hear" ... abbreviation of "Hear him, hear him"
Use originated (popularized) by members of The House of Commons (British Parliament) in the 18th century.
So... maybe the expression was altered by the somewhat arbitrary (and sometimes capricious) changes made by Noah Webster in the early 19th century?
It's an American thing (I shall put on my tin hat now).
Wonderful thread-jack, by the way _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Even the abbreviation is from England.
From Wikipedia:
Quote: | The overuse of the phrase by an eager member of the House of Commons led Richard Brinsley Sheridan, in one speech, to deviate from his planned text and say "Where, oh where, shall we find a more foolish knave or a more knavish fool than this?". The eager Member of Parliament repeated "hear, hear."[3]
