I fell out laughing this morning as my daughter was listening to her Brain Pop video about planets. Direct quote (using ur-AY-nus):

"Uranus is a gassy planet with two thin rings"

Ohhhh myyyyy

How do YOU pronounce it?

The New Oxford American Dictionary says:
Quote:
Uranus |ˈyo͝orənəs – Greek Mythology – a personification of heaven or the sky, the most ancient of the Greek gods and first ruler of the universe.

I believe the scientific community echoes this pronunciation. It does sound like it would be the way to speak the name of a Greek god. However, some decades ago, the other pronunciation was how it was spoken in my science classes.

It's yur-AY-nus if you're making corny jokes.
It's YUR-uh-nus if you're discussing astronomy.

Easy. It's "the planet between Saturn and Neptune."

Of course when I'm speaking about darker moments in our past I usually describe/mispronounce them as being in "the annals of history". Gasp
