I know I'm not the only one reading from a monitor in an enclosed space.
Any solid methods for not picking up a nasty reflection in your mic? How big of an effect does a 22in monitor a foot or two from a shotgun mic have?
Also, does a towel on the desk cut it or is something thicker preferred?
Curious to hear your experiences. |

I read from an iPad, placed on a copy stand, which is covered with a towel. As such, the iPad is tilted upwards, I'm guessing maybe in the neighborhood of 45 degrees. My Sennheiser 416 is positioned above, pointing down toward me, also at about a 45 degree angle.
But, as you'll see in the photo, the mic is positioned in such a way - and I'm guessing here - that my voice bounces off the iPad and passes upwards, behind the mic's capsule, or at least outside the polar pattern.
I'm no physics or acoustical expert, but for your situation - if you are experiencing some reflection issues - see if you can tilt the monitor slightly so it's off-axis from where your mic is, so any reflections bounce to one side or up or down, rather than straight back. That you also have a shotgun mic can certainly help. If reflection does come straight back at you, make sure there is some absorption or diffusion behind you to handle it. _________________ Mike

I've got my monitor tilted downward and to one side so that reflections don't come straight back. I have a 27" monitor in my booth about 2 feet from my 416. |

I have two monitors, angled ever so slightly inward, so they form a shallow "V" shape with the point facing away from me. But I use a shotgun mic that is positioned off to my right and running parallel to the screens, so reflection off them is not an issue. Reflection off the door would be, so I have a quilt hanging in front of the door. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

As noted elsewhere in a parallel thread, a simple clap test can be quite illuminating.
A basic familiarity with pinball or billiards will suffice.
