"Do you need a stunt mic in case yours goes phut!" asked film/location Soundman Pete.
"Really ought to have one" I replied and then we talked about dog stuff.
Yesterday a padded envelope arrived in the mail and inside was an MKH416. No note, no comment, just the mic. I thanked yer man ofcourse.
This morning I took a TV promo script into the hut, dangled the mic and read. The link below is to the raw, unedited sound file.

Sounds excellent, of course. A great gift!
You already have, or used to have, a 416, yes? _________________ Mike

Never used one in anger, had one some time ago and felt it sounded best disconnected. This time I must've dangled it properly.
Used the dangley thingy what came with my Nearmum V86 (never buy anything in badly lit pub car parks from the back of a Transit van)

Seems to works just fine for a stick. Speaky words in one end and waggly waveforms out of the other... all done with some semblance of quality.
You do realize that this is now going to start a whole thread about the relative merits of the 416 for VO work, the fact that you've given one houseroom (again), the impending apocalypse heralded by you being unfaithful to the u87, and the price of kippers in Buckie (that last point being the most interesting & important). _________________ Bish a.k.a. All electric stuff is nowhere near as important as the nut at the end of it. I have now established that it works so can put it back in my sock drawer to frighten the Dragons of Prahndowr; they eat socks y'know and pooh them out as designer sweaters to be sold in Brentwood. |

This thread is quite entertaining.
Unfortunately my language expertise lies in seeing the 'currents in the tide' when dealing with the language of Texas cow-country, that part of the Ozarks that fades into Piney Woods, and Urbanized Appalachia.
If I understood all the hidden messages in the language of what we call The British Isles on this side of the pond, I would be laughing too hard to even consider typing a response.
While Bish hunts down another kipper.... I shall go brew a pitcher of Sweet Tea.... the essence of Dixie. |

I only just noticed that my kipper-related message also had a kipper-related signature line (and it also followed on from a conversation with Philip that included multiple kipper references). This is awfully telling. Being separated from all that smoked piscine goodness must be having an unconscious effect on me. This surfacing seems to indicate that I'm pining like a parrot pines for the fjords. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Bish & Banskey make me smile
& I hope the sock drawer is well padded...or...maybe Jazz & Bess would like it as a new toy?

Hmmm, I've always thought that I should have a backup for my 416. Y'know, in case it ever goes "phut!"
On an unrelated note, I've measured, and yes, a U87 will fit in my mailbox.

I use a 416 and have a backup 416. Never thought of it until now, but I should hook them up together so I could have an 832.
It's a shotgun mic, right? So what’s wrong with a Double Barrel Shotgun mic?? _________________ Never do anything you wouldn't want to explain to the Paramedics

You could saw the ends off both for a better blast pattern and hold-up your local Bank should you fall on hard times.
"All the money in the bag or I'll ....er ....read out loud!"
"Do as he says Martha, he could have syballance AND 'plosives!"
CUE SIRENS
Loudhailer "Police, put down your weapon and come out with your hands up!"
Passing Booth Director "Ok, but this time play with it a little"
Loudhailer "Police? Put DOWN your weapon and come out with your hands UP!"
APPLAUSE
Director "Well, we ALL loved that but best have another for safety as the read could be ...."
Loudhailer "The READ I'm giving you is the read it needs! WHERE in the depths of your ignorance ...." |
