Referring to this conversation from Nov 6—
First I received a badly formatted email to my professional (on my website) email address:

While the lack of personal salutation is suspicious, the sender's email was a total red flag.
I send a simple query "What kind of production are you doing?" and got THE LETTER this morning. (still no personal salutation!)
Quote: | Hi,
Thanks for your response and sorry for delay in response. It is a $850 voice over (Assignment) for you. A new corporate client of mine wants to create their online ((website))) . You don't have to be worried about your experience; we have specialists, and Contract Studio Engineer who will bring the real perfection to your job. It’s a 2 day job and wouldn't take more than 1 hour each day.
Job Location: The recording will be held at a rented studio close to your location, so you don't have to worry about traveling, the name and address of the studio will be forwarded to you before the date of the recording.
Company: TS Media
Job Description:
We are creating an animated marketing video to be distributed through web and social media. The overall video is approximately 10 minute in length with the Game Show host part being about 5 seconds. The Game Show Host voice must be boisterous, fun and entertaining.
Please title the audition file with your name to assist the client in selecting an appropriate candidate.
Sample Script:
(Contestant) Uh, I’m no rocket scientist but I’d say…traffic congestion.
(Contestant) Well, I’m no rocket scientist but that’s a no brainer. Mass Transit is the better option.
Expectations:
You need to be in a good mental and emotional state of mind. Basically this is all that is required of you. Kindly get in touch with me as soon as possible if you will take the job (Interested) so that more details will be provided to you and we can continue from there. Please, no time wasting. The job is private and confidential so I am handling it personally.
Let me know if you will take the job to commence with next arrangement. Please I'd like you to check your email on a regular basis; I might have updates for you.
Warm regards,
Gary. |
You can see he (someone) is a bit clever with the content of the "assignment". I will send him a polite refusal and post any response.
If I had the time to faff about with it, I'd play it out as far as I could. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

There is some kind of red flag in almost every sentence of this guy's emails. Flake-o-rama.

Fascinating.
I received the exact same email this morning, only it was from a Thomas Stone at TS Media. Trusty Google revealed there is a TS Media Group, but details about it are few. I responded, but haven't heard anything back.
I'm leery of any entity that describes a job first as what they say they'll pay, rather than anything about the content and use. Sounds like a come-on to me. _________________ Mike

I have, instead, decided to begin work on a bar of Lindt Excellence 85% cocoa dark chocolate. _________________ Mike

I received the same thing this week from a "Dale Ahrens" and recalled seeing essentially the same text here in a thread some weeks back, so I simply deleted the guy. Well, his email, anyway. I've never actually deleted anyone, at least not with prejudice, although that was a significant part of my family's business just a couple generations ago, but I digress...
On the general topic of scams, though - I admit tremendous enjoyment and much glee in reading scam emails of all kinds. The stuff at scamorama.com is ridiculously fun to waste your time reading. I actually even bought their book, which I suppose lands me squarely in the realm of dorkdom.

Yes! I got one of these via Voice123 a while back. They assured me that I could bring a parent or friend with me to the recording studio if I was nervous.
Great! Phew! |

I got this email yesterday. I've been down the scam road before with full knowledge it WAS a scam.
So I'm playing along.
So far they've "Booked" a studio near me, a good friend's place, (I have an email out to him)
The latest email, is the key I was looking for, they're going to send me a check, I deposit it, pay myself half of the fee, and the rest I send to the "consulting engineer"
Ya, ok. AFTER IT CLEARS... which of course, it won't. But I'll give the fake check to my bank and have them investigate the fraud. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

I attempted to play along by saying I was interested. When the reply with the "details" (the $850 carrot) came, I replied asking:
"Does your company not have a website?"
There's been no response since. _________________ Mike

I got it, the guy's name was Burke Steele. The initials tipped me off.
But yea, he said he found a studio near me (there aren't many near me, so that's another tipoff).
I didn't respond. _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |

Since they don't mention anything about needing to deposit in your bank account 10 million US dollars they are holding for the recently deposed Liberian government
for a 10% fee payable to you...... I'd pass on it. |
