Here's a new one on me; similar to the "studio near you" letter:
Quote: | Hi Mike,
Good afternoon! I’m Josh from Christian Holy City Church. My partners and I have listened to your demos on the internet. We appreciate your ability and would like to bring up a new opportunity.
At the moment, the church has many projects on hand (chapters in an audiobook) ranging from 5000 to 15000 words and would like to see if you are interested.
Our recital requirement is:
- No added/missing words, nor mistakes.
- We desire a speed of about 110~130 words/minute.
- Proper emotion and tone.
- Adequate preparation for recital
- Dry vocal track; 32bit, 48KHz; -3db to 0db
Attached is the audition script sample. Looking forward to your demo. If there are any questions or you would like to speak to me about the project, please feel free to contact me at any time! 646-000-0000
Best

Unlike the "studio near you" letter, this one at least addresses me by name, but searches of both the church and phone number (a Manhattan area code) are inconclusive, with the sole exception that there is a LinkedIn page for this person/church.
I don't want to jump to conclusions or be disrespectful, but...

Mike,
That is actually a legitimate request. I received a referral to them from Debbie Irwin and submitted an audition for them. Ultimately they decided not to use me, which is fine; but I know they are looking for at least one new male narrator. Pay is pretty close to my normal eLearning rates, so well above typical "audiobook" rates. _________________ Be well,

It's always good to be cautious about solicitations... it's easy to get a little gun-shy after a major attempted scamming incident. This one, I think, passes the test easily enough. It seems that Josh knows what he's talking about (within certain limitations) and has provided a contact number. In cases like this, a quick googling of the phone number or the establishment itself itself should provide confirmation... and a quick call to the number will remove all doubt.
To be honest, the only thing that bothers me here is the requirement for 110-130 wpm. This may be a good thing if you're charging per finished hour, but recording at that speed would be very unnatural to me _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Record at 110 words per minute with gusts of up 130. The sample rate of 32/48 is not necessary for spoken speech unless your voice is orchestral or Ostrich like or like an Orchestral Ostrich. |

Thanks, Bish.
I wasn't so curious about the word rate (given the application, I can understand why they'd want a somewhat slower speed) as I was that 32-bit recordings are requested. No trouble to record them that way but, from what a studio engineer tells me, anything beyond 24-bit – especially for dry spoken word – only results in extra drive space being taken up; there's no real benefit. _________________ Mike

Could be the weird acoustics of the church. Things bounce around like crazy, and I imagine anything that might improve clarity would be desireable. _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

They are probably used to seeing 32bit float on their software. |

This is what I meant about "within certain limitations". If I'm using Adobe Audition it gives me the option for 32-bit (float)... and Twisted Wave, I can opt for 32-bit. This is interpreted by many as the "top quality setting"... as is the 48kHz sampling rate. He's obviously using the top numbers as a way of ensuring top quality. Misguided logic (but it may serve to filter out those that don't understand what he's referring to). I know other engineers and producers that do the same. It's the theory that says that larger numbers mean higher quality by definition. It's the same argument that makes people insist that a 20M pixel camera on their phone is, by definition, better than a 16M pixel high-end SLR! _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish
