Hello Everybody
I'm about to reconfigure my booth to allow me to stand. I was previously seated on a stool that's too low. It's compressing my diagphragm and just generally bad for performance.
To do, so I think I need to get the monitor out of the booth to allow more space. If I do this, I'll not have the ability to view skype video any longer
So, my question is this. When in a live directed session, what percentage require the director to use video to have you see them?
Thanks,
Paul _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

It depends on how ofter you have to use full-windowed video Skype. I don't have a monitor in the booth either (I have an iPad on a copy stand) My Skype directed sessions (and I do quite a few) are usually audio only. For those odd occasions where the director/producer/engineer wants a video link, I simply use my iPhone on the copy stand. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I've never, ever had to use video to be directed.
So my percentage is 0. (<--- see, math is easy!) _________________ Always look on the bright side of life.

I did one video directed session through Google Hangouts a couple of months ago and only because I had no idea how to do it without the camera and I didn't want to look like a great fool and cover it up. My usual foolish countenance is enough.
Speaking of which here I am with my two main mics and the new Hook screens I got for them.

Never had a producer request video. It degrades the audio signal considerably in my experience.
However, I have had one very awkward session when the producer connected with his video on and mine off and he didn't know it. By the time I realized he had no idea I could see him it was too late to mention it. He was sitting in his garage/office (Sunday) in PJ's and went through the usual behavior we all do when we think we cannot be seen. I.e, looking at facebook in the middle of my takes, picking his nose and some things I won't spell out. I eventually had to turn my monitor off because I was stifling laughter.
So, if you have a camera in your booth, don't do that.

I've been asked about the mic screens. They are both from http://www.thehookstudios.com/filters.html
There's the shotgun version, and the one on the CAD is one of the rectangular aluminum ones meant for a standard tubular side address mic, but, they come fairly flat so it was easy to wrap it around the flat faced CAD. It doesn't eliminate plosives but does reduce them a fair amount.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I've actually done dozens of video directed voiceover sessions; some of them for European clients and most of them for my own directors when I'm working on eLearning or audiobook narrations.
I solved the problem of Skype bogging down my workstation by designating a second computer (including extra mouse, keyboard and monitor with me in my studio) just for Skype and Google Hangouts use. _________________ Be well,

For the record, I would never ask to direct any of the participants in this thread on camera -- except Kristin. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Thanks everybody for the responses. Bob, do you route the audio from your studio mic back to the client? Or do you just have the separate computer in the booth so they can see you and use the audio from it separately?
That latter is what I'm thinking. IF it comes up, I can just do the skype call from my tablet. The only issue is the audio would be over the tablet, not the studio mic. _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

Hey Bruce, glad to hear I was not the only one that found the issues with plosives on the shotgun version. Had to add back the HH Pop screen after listening to some sessions with Jodi Gottlieb...ugh.
