My San Diego locals probably saw this on TV.
Yes... I live in a 55 and above community.

On Saturday a neighbor on our street thought someone was breaking into their house, fired a few shots.
Another neighbor across the street dialed 911. About 7 cop cars later...

... it was all over. No break-in, just a mental problem with a small caliber hand gun.

My wife was planting stuff in the backyard. When I walked into the front bedroom, I noticed a black & white in the street. I looked out the window and saw 3 cops walking up the street, guns in hand. That put me in "Oh crap!" mode. Average age in my "hood" is 76.

It was actually a case of guns in the hands of a mentally ill person. The two do not mix. Todd it wasn't a training issue but guns in the hand of someone who shouldn't have access to any weapons. Many deadly incidents involve the mentally ill. Guns and alcohol (or other drugs) don't mix either.

Did you have Deja Vu and think you were in Baltimore for a second?

greg - also true. a responsible gun owner makes sure everything is locked up & stored properly. but, that too, is training. over the past two weeks the wife, boy #1 and i completed a 16 hour training course. six hours of it was legal training - the rest defensive shooting. it was a great course - but sobering as well.

What I think is very scary is that unlike other weapons, such as a knife for example, a gun accomplishes a task much more quickly and easily.

As I see it, when a person armed with a gun is not the best at stating his position with words – or cares not to, once his threshold is reached, responding with a gun almost always immediately ends the conflict.

My apologies, Todd. I didn't want to make a political statement one way or the other. I've removed that content and what remains now is only my opinion.

Yup, thanks for the self-policing. Politics is a No-No here— in fact, it's our Rule One.

Paul... I left Baltimore in 1967, way before shootings were comonplace.

I think it will be awhile before our neighborhood knows all the details of what happened. I'll just have to wade through the rumor mill untill then. First responders are very familiar in our community. Fire trucks and medics are always called in for falls, heart attacks, and injuries. RSVP checks peoples houses when they're on vacation, and also visit shut ins.

And I am also the owner of a rifle (ruger 10/22). I've had training, have a lock on it, and store ammo elsewhere.
