I like it best plain and unprocessed. |

I don't find that your version WITH EQ did anything special for your sound. the unprocessed original "ain't bad".
Hey! No fair recording at very, very low levels and then measuring room noise at THAT level. If you want REAL WORLD noise numbers, don't you need to raise the file gain until audio is bumping into 0dBFS and then measure the noise? |

I like the raw audio too. It's a pretty good mic that is very transparent.
The levels are what I normally record at with my Neve Portico 5032 so I didn't record and then raise the volume. It's just what the mic picks up. So I guess maybe that would more accuately be termed ambient room sound level? |

Just like make up, less is often more.
If the environment is awesome, the gear solid -- audio processing usually doesn't have an additive value.
What's crazy is how different mics work with different pres and interfaces. For example, my TLM-102 did NOT like my ZOOM TAC-2R. It sounded horrible. My CAD e100s sounded fine. The CAD sounded pretty consistent across all my interfaces, but the TLM not so much.
The TAC-2R has Burr-Brown ADATs too and is Thunderbolt. It does sound great with other mics like the RE-20...but not the Neumann.
I just started using an iD22 -- and the TLM-102 now sounds AMAZING. Seriously, noticeably better than through the Apogee Duet.
It's weird. I was thinking of selling the TLM-102 at a good price just to put money toward a TLM-103 ... but I may just keep it since it finally sounds like its worth the price I paid. _________________ "The wise ones fashioned speech with their thought, sifting it as grain is sifted through a sieve." - Buddha

My chain is Mystery Mic-Neve Portico 5032-Focusrite Forte. I'd put this mic up against an 87. Not the same but quite good. |

I've got no guesses on what mic it is...but I do like how it sounds on your voice. I feel like it is smooth but might have a hair too much bass...depending on where you are in relation to said mic. But that is just me as a VO listening to the mic...I'm not sure how it would sit in a mix. Sounds good though Do you have any recent raw samples of the Neve and your daily driver mic? I'd love to compare. |

My daily driver has been a sennheiser MKH415 that I've had for several years now. I'll see if I can dig up or record a raw sample. |

Here's a raw file of the 415.

I'm generally about 10 inches away from the mic speaking directly to it on axis. |

Sounds much quieter and thinner with eq, "veiled" comes to mind. Love it without! _________________ "There's Magic all around us; you just have to see it. And the most wonderful Magic of all, is just bein' alive." -Uncle Montork, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe |

Neve stuff def. gives a "gritty" or "crunchy" or "edge" doesn't it? All of those words can't quite describe it...but when you hear the Neve sound, you know it. I personally really like it. I can see why people love those 1073s.
It's not distortion per-say...and it's not "noise" really either. It's maybe a crispness without being to sibilant?
Now on to the mystery mic...Hm. Tough, why do I get the impression we're being trolled and it's a really inexpensive mic and you're having fun with us? LOL LOL
Seriously though -- I don't have a clue. _________________ "The wise ones fashioned speech with their thought, sifting it as grain is sifted through a sieve." - Buddha
