I bought my first computer (the Mac SE) on December 15, 1989 after having been using several of them at work for two years.
Day after day, I'd fire up the computer, light a cigarette, take a puff or two, then put it down in the ashtray and begin working/playing with the computer. I'd get so wrapped up in what I was doing that by the time I wanted to take a couple more puffs on the cigarette, I found that it had burned all the way down. This happened on an increasing basis for a little over two years when I finally concluded that I was buying far more cigarettes than I was actually smoking. And the smoke in my face as I worked was becoming bothersome, too.
About that time, the first transdermal nicotine patches came on the market. Shortly after, a medical clinic opened directly across the street from my apartment. After finishing a pack of cigarettes, I decided to see if the patch "was right for me."
If I remember correctly, the regimen was: the highest of three strengths for two weeks, followed by two weeks on the next strongest, and finishing with two weeks on the weakest patch.
Before the first two weeks were up, I discovered the patches were leaving red marks behind (the patch was to be placed in a different location every day).
The doctor had me stop using the patch temporarily. But I never went back to it because the urge to smoke was already gone.
I had smoked my last cigarette on April 7, 1992 and haven't smoked another one since. The best thing I ever did for myself. _________________ Mike

Wow! A story with a twist. I was hooked from the beginning but I thought the storyline was going to be that you and your MAC got married and lived happily ever after.
I'm glad the cessation program worked so well for you. Congratulations. |

Well, in a way we did: I've owned nothing but Macs ever since.
Thanks, Vernon, Lee and Bob. I realize and am very grateful that I'm one of the lucky ones. So many still struggle. _________________ Mike

They had nicotine chewing gum when I quit, but I don't think they had the patches back then. I went cold turkey. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I truly have nothing but the highest respect for anybody who quit smoking. I never smoked myself, but have a very addictive personality and have read up enough to know that nicotine is one of, if not, THE most addictive substances on the planet. My wife has resumed smoking recently again, after about 25 years of not smoking, but she only smokes 2 to 3 cigarettes a day, and has vowed to quit again this year, so again, I know firsthand the lure of nicotine. Highest congratulations to all of you who have managed to kick the habit. It truly is something to be extremely proud of. Thank you for sharing. _________________ Scott R. Pollak

Nasty horrid drug is nicotine. Gives you so little yet can rob you of so much. So addictive too. Well done for kicking it Mike. _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover
