Just do this.

Background. Today I did my usual weekly keyboard tapping whilst drinking my 47th cup of coffee to check the numbers.

From agents in US - Zero. Lots of time could've been wasted in doing auditions. I genuinely look at EVERY audition.

Work from agent in Europe (as opposed to UK) pays all my bills including my mortgage every month plus $300 per month so me and the Collies can eat.

SHELTER
FOOD
UTILITIES
EMERGENCIES (insurance)

Covered.

My job is Voice Over work. It is not my vocation, craft, career, "what I am" or how I am defined by others. My job provides (supplies) my needs.

Ok, so what about all the other stuff? That is a question that answers itself "SO WHAT!"

2nd Quarter 2016. Do the sums.

Are you covered?

Ignore everything else.

When you've made sure you are covered then do other stuff.

I just had a look and the cost of one of my trips was over $10,000. Not showing off, simply a number. The key is that it did not impact the "are you covered?" part of my life.

Spend on riotous living what you DO NOT need.

"Well obviously I attend DippyVoices Conference because it is an investment in my business" OBVIOUSLY and you can show that it DID NOT impact "are you covered" AND that the return was DIRECTLY, MEASURABLY and PROVABLY associated with that event or any other (for the most part) nonsense we claim is a "Career" thing.

Voyage of discovery. Do you need to get a job? Easy way to find out is to check if you already have one.

"Hercule stopped studying with me right in the middle of my VO course" said Dave Coach-Klass

"Hercule was studying with you to pay HIS bills not yours. It worked. By not studying with you his net profit (money with which he pays his bills) increased by $400 per month."

What we are spending on our businesses is nowhere near as revealing as what we shouldn't be spending.

The time we spend at work is nowhere as revealing as the time we spend at work NOT working.

Repeat after me ad nauseam:

1) I go to conferences primarily because they are social gatherings disguised as tax write-offs... not because they are part of my career plan, but because they are my fun plan.
2) I play on social media because I am somewhat addicted to it... not because I have to keep a high profile for the benefit of my career.
3) No one is doing me a favour when a financial transaction is involved.
