Am narrating an audiobook on building a successful consulting practice, and the information is invaluable to anyone building any kind of business. There are almost truly a million great bytes of insight, info and quotes in it, and I may add others to this thread, but here's one that just jumped out at me:

"Marketing is the art and science of creating need. You can reach out to people to do this, but it’s far more effective to attract them to you. When you knock on a door, you have to justify why you want entry. When people knock on your door, they’re happy to pay the price of admission."

And, interestingly, I never auditioned for this book. I have a client who initially found me on ACX.com who now regularly sends me e-mails saying "I have another book I'd like you to narrate..." I have her "knocking on my door."

I prefer to think of marketing as the art and science of exploiting need." You didn't make your ACX client need to have the audiobook narrated; you made your client need the book narrated by you.

If you wish to view it that way, that still works. Bottom line is to somehow get clients to want YOU. Not just want to have their piece voiced, but to say "I want Scott to narrate this."

I recently narrated a Civil War Prisons documentary for an independent filmmaker. He called me last week saying he's now working on a new film and wants me to narrate it. Of course I said yes. Nice to have that "need" (i.e.: "want"?) there.

My favorite quotes are the kind notes from clients. I move the best to an email folder called Compliments. On those rare days when I'm feeling down I go and read some of those.

Then I bawl like a baby wondering why they're not calling me right now.

Naw, just kidding. They really help.

Success comes from repeat business from clients who love your work, and to collect those:

Make them happy. Meet or exceed their expectations. Anticipate their needs and fill them. Make them love you and your results, and they'll come back again and again. And the marketing cost for this in money? Close to zero.
