I think though... if you find you need to fiddle with the sound a lot, there's more serious issues going on to be addressed. Good sound in = good sound out.

Totally agree. I recently started using an RE320 for narration. I did a few auditions for shorter stuff with it and it sounds so good I didn't do a darn thing to the output except normalize.

Amen. With the mic I've been using lately I finally sound like, "How I sound in my own head" and I whatever EQ'ing or anything I do just seems to make it sound worse.

Glad to see you're liking the RE320. It's a little brighter than the RE20, and from the recordings I've heard has a bit more of a condenser sound to it.

I found a s steal of a deal on a LDC-705 on ebay a while back. While I haven't played around with it much, when I put it side by side with my RE-20 it makes the RE-20 sounds funny. Both being dynamics it was pretty surprising!

Now, don't get me wrong...for some stuff where someone wants a "ready to go" product some de-essing and light compression are fine...but it seems like when I've played around and piled on the software I end up down a rabbit hole.

..

I think when it comes down to it, the need to fiddle endlessly with processing a track means you don't know what the hell you are doing..

That being said, there is a lot that can be said for having a go - to chain of fx for your VO's.. outside of your basic normalization..

A hi-Pass filter can be your friend, as well as the ability to correctly work with an expander/compressor/limiter.. and aw hell.. yeah. I admit it. I have gone to LoudMax from time to time..in a pinch

Where I ran into issues was with the de-essers and noise reduction software.. I'd rather re-record the entire session than mess with those suckers..
