I would imagine that a u87 in studio north would be far more critical of the minimalist treatments. The good thing about a 416 (aka canine throw-toy) is that it's a tad more forgiving of a less than perfect room and environment... whereas the u87... not so much. It will be interesting to hear how it lines up against the 416 in studio north... or for that matter, the u87 in the Wee Huttie. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Looks nice Phillip. How does it compare to your AI version? Any preference yet? _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

I like it as it's not quite as "clinically" clean if that makes sense. All the clarity I need but with some added vintage dignity. If it were 56 years old it would be me |

I tried that once. Back in 2012 for about three weeks. It didn't work out for me.
Was the "old one" pulled out of a drawer and pugged in. I've heard (and Frank will know far better) that these old 'uns can really shine, but sometimes need a once-over by a Neumannesque techie-type if ignored for a while. Or did it come from a working environment and you're just re-homing it? _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

So Banksey, are you saying it's true that the old U87s (Pre AI version)
sound better than the AIs? |

Mic used to be Mothered by the BBC so if a Network Promo Voice even looked at it in a funny way a Blenheim Bomber was dispatched to (then) West Germany to collect Georg Neumann and his trusty bag of spanners.
The sound? U87ai is fine for me. The U87 is kinder on an elderly and frail man.
So old is the latter the connection is not XLR to XLR but xlr at mixer end but a screw in 5 pin something or other.

Philip now knows the difference between an AI and a real you 87. The Vintage has a definite feel to it it can be experienced in the AI.
Some old u-87 need to be fixed and tweeked others need to be just ciddled it sounds like Phillip just got one that needs to be coddled.
Congrats's Mr. Banks, now you have microphone worthy of your dulcet tones.

Irony: by the time we're old enough to know the difference, we're generally too old to be able to hear it. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Just ordered this for Studio North. I needed something that doesn't do anything and this does it brilliantly. My "sound" needs to be invisuless.
I don't need ALL of them knobs and buttons OR the clock thing but they were included in the price.

The UA 710 is fine pre-amp but it will "do something" to your sound if you turn the knobs a certain way. It can get "tooby" if you want it to, or not as the case may be. |
