I'd like to see some numbers on this. To me, it's counter-intuitive. If you wrap something absorbent in something that's non-absorbent, doesn't it (by definition) become non-absorbent? I understand that a layer of shrink-wrap has more "flexibility" than a piece of 1/2" sheet-rock (and there will be a certain level of transmission via a drum-head effect), but, to put it simply, if you can't blow through it, I see its "bass trap" properties being somewhat compromised. Now, I do understand that taking a big chunk of the wrapped stuff and putting it in the booth (especially in a corner) will alter the room's geometry and have an effect on the sound... but as for being an effective bass trap, I am skeptical. _________________ Bish a.k.a. I don't know what to tell you Bish. I don't have numbers, but anecdotally I can tell you they work. You can hold them in different spots in the room and actually hear the bass frequencies being gobbled up, especially with my voice.
I'm sure I could do better, but for now, they are extremely effective, and have been for me in multiple setups. _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

The bottom line is always... whatever works!
It's just that the engineer in me raised one eyebrow in a quizzical manner _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

FYI,
I contacted Whisper Room about the possibility of mounting. Not sure why I didn't think of that first, they are so nice.
"As long as you use screws that are not longer than ¾” you should be fine. If you have something that is very heavy and need to use longer screws, the best place to drill is the seam seals as they are 2” thick instead of the 1” of the walls." _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

I use recycled denim in my booth, and I'm with Bish on this one. I think that even if it does work, it would work better if it wasn't wrapped in a reflective surface. Here is a great test: Put your mouth right next to the plastic wrap of the tube and talk, then cut the tube open (you can always tape it back together) and talk into it. I'd be willing to bet you hear a noticeable amount less reflection. |

Bass frequencies will simply sail through the outer wrapping of your insulation - it's not an issue.
You might argue that you'll hear some reflections in the upper frequencies but that's probably going to be a good thing. _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

Interesting thought. I'd love to hear some A/B on that to see what stuff sounds like. |

Paul,
If you get the acoustic panels from ATS with the frame included, they provide hardware for mounting them on your booth walls. I have them and they work quite well. Also for your ceiling I would recommend some kind of cloud. I went with a custom made 2-inch thick panel that you can float from the ceiling. That requires some slightly different bracketing to mount, but if you are handy at all you can do it using basic corner braces from a hardware store. |

I have an ATS panel as a ceiling cloud that I have suspended at a 45° angle. I screwed an eye hook into each corner of the panel's plywood back, and screwed four more eye hooks into the ceiling, then connected them with these:

To achieve the angle, I just added a loop of twine to the rear two connections. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I'm with Dayo. If you built a booth out of the same shrink wrap that Paul has around his denim, I'm pretty certain it wouldnt stop even 5% of the low frequency. Reflective? Yes. Absorb low frequencies? Not at all. By compacting it into a smaller footprint he gains a lot of density without losing space. He has plenty of other high frequency absorption to offset anything that reflects off of the wrap. Is it ideal? Probably not. But adding traps to a 4x4 space isnt ideal at all in their standard form.
It's pretty clever. |

Paul, congrats on the WR. I find nothing about your meddling insane.
This should give you no comfort.
Q: Would you post, or refer us to, before/after samples? I live for such things, which speaks volumes about how easily I find joy.

Sorry, just realized I never answered this. I didn't do scientific measurements, but the Drumperfect was pretty good at taming low frequency rumble. I would say at least 50% better than the VBTG.
That said, it still wan't enough for my situation with a 4 lane highway running through my backyard, We have those 50 foot high concrete walls the state installs on highways, but much leaks through.
Again, not entirely scientific, but I can say with the Drumperfect, I would have to run a high pass filter at about 75hz and -20db to completely get rid of the highway. With the VBTG that didn't help at all, the highway was still very audible. With the Whisper Room I can get away with 45 hz and about -8db _________________ http://www.paulstefano.com |

Paul,
As you know from our FB posts, I'm very interested in your Whisperroom work. Can you share what mic you used on the sample you posted.
BTW, I'm probably ordering a new Whisperroom tomorrow!
