You can make your own excellent pop filters by going to Dollar Tree and picking up a pack of scouring pads (you get at least 6 for your dollar). The set includes various colors, but the main feature is that these *cheap* scouring pads have a very 'open' matrix construction. That is, they have no where near the density of ScotchBrite and other premium brands.

Holding one of them up, you'll be able to see a lot of light shining through...and by the same token, they are not restrictive when it comes to sound. But they do provide just the right 'baffle' to act as a wind screen in front of a mic.

They are easily cut to any shape by scissors, and of course can be attached or positioned in all sorts of ways - even with a lowly clothespin or rubber band.

I haven't been able to notice any affect on recordings, other than the desired reduction in plosives reaching the mic.

Net cost: $1 (pack of 6-10)

The best pop filter I've used is a Stedman. It works for any mic. There are other, more expensive pop filters to be had, but the Stedman does the job very well for about $60 bucks.

As you mention having purchased the tlm 103, check with Rycote to determine the specific model for that mic. (Model USM-L is appropriate for mics such as the tlm 102, weighing in under 400g).

I believe this is the correct sized model for the 103. They picture it with the 103 on their website, and I've used it with the Sennheiser MK4 and new Rode NT1 without any problems.

For Stedman users:

I sometimes use the Stedman for it is indeed excellent at reducing plosives. But don't make my mistake: I mounted it on the same boom (I use the excellent Triad-Orbit dual-boom system) as the mic I was using, and in editing noticed a distinct metallic ring at the end of phrases. At first I thought something else was going on, but only when I removed the Stedman did it go away. I've since remounted it on something OTHER than the boom stand.

This is recording 101, I'm sure, but in case anyone else comes across this issue, I thought it might be worth pointing out that you don't want your Stedman pop screen on the mic's boom. (NOTE: the Stedman filter is metal, which is integral to its design, and so is particularly prone to this situation.)
