This hasn't happened to me yet, but it's something always at the back of my mind. When you are hired by a client and for some reason, when it comes down to it, you are seriously unable to satisfactorily complete the job by their deadline......for instance you develop a horse throat or get really ill....is it protocol that you not only inform the client that you will not be able to do it, but try to find someone else the client might be able to use? I mean....since they hired you in good faith and through no fault of their own you cannot deliver as agreed upon....should you do what you can to find a suitable replacement? What exactly should we do in a circumstance like that? _________________ TG2

Besides praying?
Yes, If I am compeltely unable to do it, I will find someone else for the client - per approval. It may not be 'customary', but it is courteous and professional.

It depends on the size of the job-- if youve already got a great deal of stuff voiced for a book or a corporate client, it's tough to pass the job onto someone else-- not to mention the fact that the someone else will be behind the 8 Ball with time.
I've passed single gigs to ladies I trust if I'm just a junker in the Vox Department for a deadly-deadline job.
The long stuff can usually withstand a bit a push with time, but I'll also burn the midnight oil if I've not been able to work for a day. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

If you have a voiceover session lasting longer than four hours, consult your physician immediately. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

You guys are killing me!..hahahahahaha That's ok, I needed a good laugh today.
If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? Thank you, Frank and DB for your serious answers. I've often contemplated what exactly the protocol was. Figured I might as well get the advice of the pros before it happens to me. And the rest of you.....If you'll take note of my very first sentence of my original post. "This hasn't happened to me yet..." Thank God I prefaced it that way. lol _________________ TG2

Tom,
Last year I was in the middle of narrations for a national television special when I developed the worst laryngitis of my life. It took almost three weeks to get my voice back. Thankfully the client had built in enough production time that they were able to wait until I was back to full health to finish.
At the same time, I'd just been cast for a smaller project and that client didn't want to use anyone else. So, he too waited, but his deadline was tighter so I recorded for him before I was completely back to normal. He did pay me, but has never called again.
The national TV guys, they've called multiple times since then. So, some you win and some you don't. _________________ Be well,
