I'm in the process of getting an e-learning and a narration demo produced. I have heard demos with both. I lean against it personally, but I was wondering if someone had a compelling case FOR background music in these types of demos?

My narration demo has music; my e-learning demo doesn't.

Ditto on the no music for e-learning. If you feel you must have music for the narration demo search the net for "royalty free production music". On many sites you can buy an audio file of your choice for a few to many dollars, download it, and then it's free to use after that.

My personal opinion is, because demos are theoretically supposed to be either clips of actual jobs or segments produced to appear as such, that an eLearning demo should not have music. I say this for two reasons: (1) due to what are often very long lessons, eLearning clients - who are always asking for our lowest possible rates - will not spend additional money on music rights and the cost related to selecting and mixing it with the VO; and, (2) unless very brief lessons geared for children, I would think music would be seen as an unnecessary distraction from learning. For that very reason is why school teachers in my era confiscated radios brought into class and why many parents forbade their kids from studying with a radio or TV on.

Now, if you're going to produce an eLearning demo segment about music history/theory, etc.... Wink

If you are doing a documentary narration demo, such as the kind of programming you see on cable television, then yes, you want production. This is the only kind of narration I do, so I can't comment on other genres.

And forgive my ignorance, but I haven't a clue what e-learning is. So I bow to others for this advice. B
