So I finally got around to sending Mike Joly my old NT1A, and he did his magic to make it sound like a U87. One recording is with my 416 and the other is with my new modded mic. My ears are honestly no good at this.

I'm not telling you which is which. The both sound identical to me! I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Not identical.

1 - Fuller sound.
2 - Crispy all the top and not much bottom

Can yer man make a mic sound like a U87? No.

Listen - https://soundcloud.com/philip-banks/pb20sec

All voiced on the inflexuless U87ai

Thank you, Philip!

#1 is the modded mic. #2 is the 416.

One thing is for sure - my voice on a U87 will never sound as good as yours on a U87!

xoxo

Yours voice is different which does not make mine better. 1 - Like most "this is exactly what you are looking for" mics has been pre-affected, mic mods are full of bottom, tweaked to sound like compression has been added and sound cool in yer cans. The trick is to make 1 sound like 2. Making 2 sound like 1 is as easy as three easy things in a particularly good mood doing something very easy after a relaxing lunch at The Ivy.

"Dave, I've made you a Modded Coffee. If you don't like the sugar just take it out"

Ask a sound guy which mic is better to provide a ready to post productionise sound, a proper sound guy, a guy who does proper post production on awesome things with budgets running into several dollars.

Don't ask here, especially your fellow colonial guys, they all think this is how every Voice should sound even when ordering a burger at a drive thru in Cincinnati.

Wow, Philip, instead of going for a career as an International Voiceoverist™, you could have made tens of dollars as a Top 40 DJ. You have a brilliant future behind you.

Am I the only one who sees a mic modded to sound like a U87 vs a 416, which sounds nothing like a U87. Do you have access to a U87 for a more reasonable comparison? I know an engineer who can make a RE20 retake fit in with a U87 session.

But he is a wizard.

Good luck.

Hey everybody - I don't care if it doesn't sound like a U87. I'm never going to buy one and I had my old NT1A laying around and thought it would be worth if for a few hundred bucks to try the mod. I thought people might be interested in hearing it. I'm really not interested in debating the value of buying one of Mike Joly's modded mics.

On mic 1 vs mic 2 - sorry if that wasn't clear, it is the title of the thread!

Good point. In that regard I think the 416 is the better pick, based on what I heard. It has a steeper learning curve and you would need to perfect "working it" to get the best results with your voice and recording space.

But In the long run I think it would serve you better.

Well that was US told!

Which mic is better? Neither, they're different. Would anyone care if Julia recorded on the NT1a (upgraded and massaged by a Spanish Sailor) or the MKH416? Not at all as they hired her sound not a room, mic or preamp sound. When a good voiceoverist works the "techie stuf" is invisible because the performance is invincible.

Thou hast caused me to spew spittle all cross the front of mine garments. Curse thee and thy wry humor.
