I had always wondered whether the 48 volt phantom power supplied by mic preamps posed any risk by hitting the mic with a sudden surge when the preamp was switched on. I'd considered that it would perhaps gradually ramp up, rather than hit the mic at full voltage.

So I contacted the fine tech staff at Focusrite, maker of my preamp, the Platinum Voicemaster Pro. And this is what they said:

"Any time you are powering a microphone preamp ON with microphones already connected to the device, it is usually best protocol to keep phantom power OFF until you have cycled power to the preamp. Once the preamp is ON, and with your microphones connected, you then should engage phantom power for each microphone that requires it."

That being said, here's one other bit of advice: NEVER, EVER plug or unplug the cable to a mic while phantom power is on.
