I changed the quote up top:
“She told him that he had the most beautiful voice she'd ever heard, that it sounded like whiskey and wood smoke.” ― Dennis Lehane, Mystic River
Have you or someone who's judgement you trust described your voice? Care to share?
Do you sometimes employ mental or sensory images to help you achieve a particular sound or read?

Louise Douglas, a novelist, friend and one time journalist once described me (before we met) thus for a newspaper article.
"...really lovely voice, the sort of voice you wouldn't mind at all waking you up with a cup of tea in the morning..... this voice like sipping Bacardi and Coke on the Bounty beach at sunset on warm sand beneath the palm trees."
Fine!
Do I use imagery or anything else? No. I just sound like me and have been doing that for years. Seriously, I suspect with me it's muscle memory so I have moved from having focus on something to simply being able to switch into it. |

I have always been unsure of how to characterize my voice, as sometimes people hire me for "raspy" voice, and some folks don't hear that at all.
Nancy Wolfson gave me a great description offhandedly once when she said, "You're voice has a powder in it"
That may not make sense to anyone but me, but when she said it, it really clicked and has stuck with me. Not sure why it matters, but somehow it gave me a bit of assurance. "Yes! That IS my voice!" _________________ Heather
