Over the weekend, I was able to play with a U-87 and fell in love. My only problem is that I work in a treated 4x4 Whisperroom. Would the two be compatible? Please say yes, but only if it's true. |

I use a large, single diaphragm condenser in my booth, and always have. It works fine, but I know not why...

Pretty sure I know whose mic you're crushin' on I use an 87 in a small space--but it's well treated with traps (mostly bass, a few mice) and panels. So a provisional yes. _________________ Jack Daniel

Thanks, Jack.
Just got off of Source Connect with Rob Ellis in Detroit using his U87. He once let me record in that booth a few years back, so I was familiar. Sounded awesome. A public and profound show of appreciation to Rob for helping me drop 3k into someone's pocket. |

If you can hold off, people let them go for $2100, $2200, $2300 or so. I got min for $2100 last year. But I'm sure you know this.
Anytime you're back in town, consider mine available. _________________ Jack Daniel

As always Dan-O it was great to catch up and talk shop. I'd say in your studio the U87 will more than pay for itself in short order. |

I'm a huge fan of the U87, I run mine through a Dizzengoff D4 preamp and I couldn't be happier.
As far as the booth... well that depends. If your booth sounds good presently with it's treatment, it should continue to sound good.
My experience with booths however is that unless you treat them with bass traps and other low frequency treatments, they sound "boothy". I'm a solid baritone, and I can find that resonant frequency in a small booth rather quickly. (especially with a square booth, they're the worse.)
I always feel that more air around a microphone the better, but we do what we can where we can. _________________ Company, villainous company, hath been the spoil of me...

Ignore the content https://vimeo.com/210123647 but look over my shoulder and see what's stuck to the wall. Listen to audio quality, the door to my booth was open, wide open. I work about a foot or so from the mic.
You'll need to do a bit of tweaking, not much because it's you and a U87 so all will be fine. |

Can't agree with the consensus - sorry. U87 will only really shine in a large space. Not saying you can't get acceptable results, but the U87 is mic that's capable of astonishing clarity. Put it in a bad room and you'll get an astonishing clear recording of ... a bad room. That's not saying that all small rooms are bad, but, let's face it, they are problematic.
This info may not stop you if your hear is set on a U87. It didn't stop me either. _________________ Colin Day - UK Voiceover

A few years ago I spied a man watching me very closely at a gig. After me and the guys had finished laying down some AWESOME Jazz and Blues himself approached me at the bar.
"So, waddya playing there? Your Bass?" I told him. He went and bought one. He still couldn't ****ing play Bass if his life depended on it !
Were that any more profound I'd own a Red Beret!

Well, here's a coincidence. I approached a local seller the other day and asked if it would be OK to borrow the mic for a couple hours to test it inside my booth.
And I quote myself "I've been told through the years that the U87 works best in more open-air studios and that closed-in environments don't allow the mic to shine."

Even if you buy a good clean used one and end up not liking it in your space, you will have no problem re-selling it. It's also a very different sound from the 416, so you'll need to discern between "how does it work in this space" and
the sound that you are used to from the 416.
Also be careful of falling into the paralysis by analysis rabbit hole....not that I would know what that's like...... |
