WARNING: awful recording environment.
In this mic test, I'm curious how these three mics handle not only my voice, but such a poor recording environment - the driver's seat of my car.
Typically, I'm packed in the backseat like the Soyuz with moving blankets and foam, but I figured I'd go full goof here instead of just-okay.
I'm in the most infant stages of VO - still working on basic elocution, besides mic technique and acoustic treatment. (Apologies in advance for the mouth noise).
NT1: https://soundcloud.com/vox-virtus-46103605/rode-nt1wav
CAD: https://soundcloud.com/vox-virtus-46103605/cad-e100swav
Mystery: https://soundcloud.com/vox-virtus-46103605/mystery-micwav
Recording goes into my Zoom H5 - not compressed or normalised, with the Zoom's 80z Hi-Pass engaged.
My question is two-fold:
1: CAD or NT1 as my primary mic?
2: Is mystery mic the most isolating/best sounding on my voice in this terribly reflective space?
Ideally, I'd like to have the most acoustically forgiving mic, one that I can set-up on the fly to get as much practice in, while being quality enough to grow with and potentially audition with in the future... does this formula still boil down to the MKH 416? |

I thought the Rode sounded the best. |

+1 for the Rode.
Slightly more rounded and pleasing to the ear. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

Thanks Rob and Ed.
I hear more mouth noise and breathiness on the NT1, but it sounds the most present to me. Mystery mic is the AT875r btw. |

I sold my CAD E100s when it started sounding bad after 3 years. They have lously QC.
Replaced it with a Rode NT1 and I love it!
And the car environment sounds great. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Thanks Lance... I landed my very first gig for a local business's Message On-Hold since getting my NT1 just several days ago. Having toyed with the CAD for the past month, I fell in love with its uniquely compact design and sparkling tone. However, I was getting fluttery self-noise past 5-gain through my Zoom and sibilance that was killing my confidence, though I know this is intensified by the supercardioid. Last night, properly packed in my car with foam and blankets, I was able to finish all the Vmail segments on the NT1 cranked to 5.5 without a bit of hiss and, surprisingly, no oppressive sibilance. I'll suggest that the NT1's sound isn't as interesting as the CAD's, but I do think it's a more accurate representation of my voice.
I hadn't taken interest in Rode during my initial mic shopping, as they seemed rather uninspired and too bright. I also didn't like what I read about the original NT1 being downgraded after-the-fact for greater profit margins. But with this new NT1 in hand, and digging a little deeper, I see that Peter Freedman may be the Elon Musk of Microphones... it seems that his profits gained from the component downgrade in the already outsourced original NT1 allowed him to invest in his own R&D, so as to now produce an NT1 that's made entirely in-house. Pretty cool... when everyone was outsourcing more and more, he was building his own castle. I really hoped the CAD could be my go-to, but the NT1 got the job!
... now to find that pack-along mic. Shotgun? Dynamic? |

I see no problem with the AT875r you already have. It's sturdy. Small. Not so expensive that you would cry yourself to sleep if it were lost or damaged.
It should be fine.
In fact, ALL of the mics you auditioned sounded fine.
It's simply that the Rode NT1 (on your voice and in this particular recording environment) sounded slightly more pleasing.
Bottom line. Concentrate more on the performance and less on the microphone. You already have some decent ones. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

Yes, the NT1 isn't very 'interesting' sounding. Kind of like a Shure KSM 44. But still a great mic.
It gives a full, clean signal that handles EQ and Processing very well. Let the client gussy it up a bit.
That said, with a 12 kHz and 3 kHz bump of about 1-2 dB it sounds very close to a TLM 103. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Funny. I own all three of those. I prefer the CAD personally as my desktop tower is slightly noisy and the super-cardiod pattern dropped my sound floor about -10db. All three of them are great mics as far as I am concerned, but I actually thought you sounded best on the AT. The other two had a wee bit too much bass for my taste, but again, I liked all of em. I pack my AT for the road, I use the CAD as my primary and the RODE is my backup. _________________ http://neilkhessvo.com |

This being why I bought it in the first place. Your demo sounds nice and crisp for sure.

Great tip Lance. I did notice "Rodent1" handles proximity a bit cleaner than the CAD.
... And most sobering advice Ed. |
