VO-BB - 20 YEARS OLD!

I've got a good friend who's sideline is voiceover. He's damn good (and funny) and I hope he'll go full time VO someday.

Anyway, he's been using some kind of ProTools Lite on an older PC for ages. He's got a new PC now and the old program just won't go into the new machine. Reasonable costs are not a problem.

It looks like the current lite version of Pro Tools is $299 a year, and Adobe Audition is $19.99 a month. Does either one of these stand out to you or is there a third option to consider these days?

The Sony software suites were recently acquired by Magix. It's still the same software.

I recently went through the same endeavor. I am tired of renting and I am going to pull the plug on Adobe. I ended up with reaper. Their pricing is very reasonable.

I have used SoundForge PRO on my PCs for over 20 years and love it.
The consumer version doesn't have several of the features that I use a lot.

Not only can you add cowbell, but you can add small ones, large one's, echoey one's. Whatever meets your prescription. Just don't add too much. I hear you can OD pretty bad with too much cowbell!

Ya, Reaper is pretty awesome. You can do most things and you can even use their full-featured demo for a long time to figure out if you like it. Then if you decide to purchase it is inexpensive.

I would very much suggest "go with what you know". If ProTools is what he is comfortable with, it's worth sticking with it. Plus, he can join me in complaining about how it is filled with useless-to-us features and a high price tag, all while never, ever even so much as spending a microsecond considering changing up.

All kidding aside, I deeply believe knowledge of and comfort with a DAW are worth almost any difference in price. The switch from older versions to newer versions of ProTools isn't jarring. Go with what ya know.

Whatever works.

For years I used Sound Forge Pro for clean up, EQ...etc.

Then I discovered Adobe Audition and it's "automatic healing" and spectral view. Very cool.

But for CHOPPING up audio, mixing different voices, or long form editing I still rely on SAW Pro. It's not modern. In fact, it doesn't want to work well even with Windows 7. (It prefers X Hobo Happy

But it's fast..and I can use it with my eyes closed.

So...whatever works.

These days I tend to use all three.

Hey...it's only audio.
