Hello good folks,
I've been plugging away getting some promos under my belt. I'm finding a little niche for myself where I'm being hired to voice a kind of in-show character, but for the purposes of a promo. I haven't run across this "genre" listening to the profesh promo demos out there, but I really enjoy it. This reel only has excerpts from 3 spots that actually aired on the teevee. I'm wondering if it might be acceptable to shop myself around to buyers of this kind of thing, or if I should get some more diverse spots in my wheelhouse first. I'm hesitant to do the whole "make a promo demo with one of the big producer guys" at this stage of the game.

Thank you go the promo gurus for any guidance you can offer! _________________ www.juliaknippen.com

Do you have representation on the coasts, yet? I can't tell from your website. |

Dan here would sure know more, but I'm thinking the third piece is classic promo material, very good! The second kind of flew by and might be good mixed into a demo. The first was pure acting and I wouldn't know if a promo demo would be the best spot for it. Just from the last piece and your overall work I'm thinking it's worth exploring!

Hi Dan - I'm with Stewart Talent in NYC for commercial and narration. And I'm with ACM (I know, I know) for the last 15 months. All three of the samples are from gigs I booked through them. I also got my first looping job through them for Marvel/Disney, as well as a VO for a Late Night sketch. So they have opened a few doors.
Bruce - thank you for the advice and encouragement! _________________ www.juliaknippen.com

The reads are solid. You would be surprised how often the character pieces come up in promo. Your acting skills will definitely help you on this path and separate you from the pack of talent who can only narrate. (Mostly former radio folk in that crowd.) |

ExRadio peeps - Assume EVERYONE is hanging on their EVERY word! Not true. Promo VOs from that background get called "Dial it down Dave" more regularly than two regular things so have to be beaten with sharp sticks or attacked by angry Marmosets in order to get them to back off, calm down and dial down the dial to the "Pssst. Look at this" read.
Actors focus on what they believe is important "DAHLING! It's ME, isn't it love?" Not true. They treat every performance as a soliloquy prompting Promo Producers to assault them with Squirt Guns filled with Squid Ink!
Then there's you. People believe you and trust you. In the pieces you've posted there are a couple of minor points I would have made you do again. Clumsy read? No, clumsy direction so not your fault. I've seen and heard you respond to direction in the blinkette of an eye which is like a blink only it takes 1/10th of the time.
Keep on, keeping on, you'll be fine. Here if you need me, you don't btw. |

I can't offer any more in the way of good, positive feedback that the others haven't already given. Simply great, Julia! _________________ Mike
