Sorry. Just a brief venting over lousy speech habits. A new mispronunciation by alleged professionals that makes me cringe: "Familiar" spoken as "firmiliar."
Of course, there's the ongoing "een" thing, too: eateen, talkeen, shopeen, washeen, etc., and not knowing how to enunciate a double T in the middle of a word: "kih-in" (kitten). Quite often, even the single T proves difficult: "dot com" becomes "dah-com."
Enunciation issues aside, I'll conclude by saying that upspeak still drives me up the wall.

For some time now people have pronounced "question" as "quesh-un" which drives some of us up a wall.
Of course we gave up pronouncing the "T" in words like "often", "fasten", "whistle", "wrestle" and "mortgage", some time ago so maybe it's a trend we will have to respect.
And who decided you can drop the "bub" from "probably" and say it "prolly"?
Just yelling into the wind,

re: Bruce's mention of "prolly:" I've heard many non-voice professionals say prolly (and, like all other linguistic atrocities, it doesn't bother me nearly as much as when it's done by pros). But, when I first SAW prolly, typed, on social media, my reaction was that some people spell words based on how they believe they hear them spoken by others. Then, after some more thought, I considered that it might be a social media (or texting) abbreviation. I can understand that.
But, as time went by, I saw more and more examples of badly misspelled words that couldn't possibly be abbreviations, and concluded (sadly) that it seems many DO spell words based solely on how they hear them spoken by others (or themselves), rather than consult a dictionary.
And auto-correct often changes spellings when it shouldn't. I've seen people re-do a Tweet and blame auto-correct for having messed up the first one but, apparently, they don't consider disabling it.
I just hope we're not seeing the beginning of a (slow) decay in communication skills. _________________ Mike

The decay is not beginning; we've been in the thick of it for some time. Even journalists have a hard time with basic writing skills. People don't read and hence can't write. We are, instead--as Neil Postman put it--simply amusing ourselves to death. _________________ Jack Daniel

Language changes over time. Goodbye is a contraction of “God be with ye” first used in the late 1500’s. That raised a bit of a stink back then. Where do we draweth the line? When do we put our buskin down and say nay?

Oh, and a whole other story is of those who believe anything they read in Google results (the description text from a given web page) is automatically truthful or factual:
"I Googled it." Instant expert.
What many don't seem to realize is, that if a website administrator doesn't compose a description of the site's pages, Google creates the description from what it believes the page is about. Google-created description text is often made up of fragments of several sentences from the entire page and should not necessarily be construed to be complete thoughts.
Search engines, similar to libraries, are merely listings/collections of available documents. _________________ Mike

Egad! You're right. I'm a former typesetter and I'm usually very careful with that stuff. Thank you! _________________ Mike
