I'm about to narrate a short product video (under 2:00) that is apparently going to be shown at a medical trade show. Can someone please suggest a fair usage rate (excluding the VO production)? I'm having trouble understanding the GVAA rate guide on this. I'm guessing a typical trade show would run, maybe, three days.
Many thanks. _________________ Mike

The GVAA rate is good in parts, but less so in others.. I tend to use the union rates as a minimum. Under the Co-Ed contract, these things are either classed as Cat I or Cat II.
Category I programs are designed to train, inform, or promote a product or perform a public relations function and are shown on a restricted, in-house basis only. This includes all programs made for exhibition in classrooms, museums, libraries and other similar locations regardless of whether or not an admission fee is charged. Category I programs can be used indefinitely.
Category II programs are intended for unrestricted exhibition to the general public and are shown at locations where the products or services are sold, or at public places such as coliseums, railroad stations, air/bus terminals, or shopping centers. Category II programs have a term length of 3 years from the date of production.
So... it looks like a Cat I.
I'm not so sure that chasing usage on this is the way to go. We get tied in knots over usage... but in all honesty, just charge a healthy session fee and specify usage restrictions. (i.e. only for use under the terms of the original agreement - exhibitions and in-house)... don't get tied up in how long they can use it. If it was a union Cat I job, there would be no time restraint and would be effectively in perpetuity. Some jobs are legitimately "for all time", despite the fact that some of our colleagues get all knotted-up about the word.
As far as the rate is concerned (if you want to use the union model)... it would cost a producer around $800 by the time you take the Cat I rate to talent, and add all the bells & whistles that go along with it. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

OK. Thanks. I just received a clarification from my client, who now says their client will use the video internally. Thanks again. _________________ Mike
