I am now officially hip-deep in home studio build mode. And I've hit a wall.

Got most of the components set up, plugged in and powered up. But I'm having issues figuring out how to get the signal from the computer back to the mixer and out to my studio monitors.
I'm using the firewire card out of the back of the mixer to the PC. So I figured I'd go off the following setup since it's routed into a PC.
I do want one of my pots assigned to the computer. So do I need to bypass the firewire cable and run a line in from the comp straight to the channel I want?

I am a NOOB to this tech/equipment stuff so please have pity. I'm learning a lot but sometimes I'm a bit dense. Wink

I don't know nuttin about no firewire mixers. Is the firewire just the input to the computer then? I guess that's what I'm assuming.

Why can't you just run cables from your computer's audio interface to a line input on your board?

Your diagram does say "two tracks can be returned to the Oynx from your computer" at the bottom. Anymore detail on that?

Good question! Shocked

The firewire supposedly digitizes the analog signal and sends it directly to the drive... bypassing the soundcard. You're supposed to be able to get audio back out of the computer via the firewire connection for playback but the manual's a little murky on how to do that.

I've got some good engineer types here at the station so I'll pick their brains today. Just thought I'd throw this out there for the tech heads to have fun with...

Tom,

You should be able to get the signal back to the board via firewire. The firewire sends your audio and returns it via a 2 channel mix. At least that is the way the Alesis boards work. You have to go into your computer, after you have loaded the drivers and software for your mixer and set what you want to record from and what/where you want playback to come from. I use a Mac and also have a PC for reference.

PM or call me if you have any other questions. I'd be happy to help.

That makes perfect sense. Sometimes I hate being an analog guy stuck in a digital world. But I do love to fiddle with buttons and knobs.

Thanks guys.

Ben, I hadn't thought about tweaking the comp settings. I've been too focused on the mixer and cabling. I may take you up on the phone call. I don't have much hair to pull out. Laugh

Tom-

Is this by chance an Alesis Multimix 8? If so , I have one in the box I have not yet tried to hook up. If you are unable to get it going, I will give mine a go and report how it goes. (Right now I'm using a single channel interface because I don't yet need the extras).

He's got a Mackie Onyx.

I wonder if there are different ways FireWire-interface mixers send and receive audio.

Tom,

I don't have an Onyx but I do use a Firebox that's firewire. You should be able to just send one of your outputs to your mixer.
